Recommend music within Roon in a household

Hi everyone,

Our son is now old enough to be interested in good music. I’ve set up a separate profile for him in Roon so he can browse through my library and search for albums, artists, and composers.
However, since he doesn’t know (and can’t possibly know) the names of many of the artists and recordings, it’s naturally difficult—if not impossible—to search for something when you don’t know its name…

So I’m looking for a way to recommend specific music to him.
Is there some kind of share sheet that lets you share a song, album, etc., with other users, or is there X-Callback URL support—or plugins—that support or enable something like that?

Room could use a little more convenience in this area.

Er, did your dad choose your music?

Isn’'t that the fun part? Let him explore for himself. As a young man I couldn’t have imagined anything worse than my father recommending music. That will change, but you have to find out what you like first.

If you really want to make some recommendations, log in to his profile and add them to Listen Later.

Ummmmm …

It’s very kind of you to want to give me advice on whether, as a father, I’m allowed to offer my son guidance or tips regarding music choices. But you don’t know enough of the background to do that. Am I perhaps a respected music editor whom many people ask for his opinion? Or is it maybe my son who asks me about specific music or tells me, “Check out this version”? To quote Ted Lasso: “Be curious, not judgmental.” Maybe you’ve had bad experiences yourselves and now want to spare my son from them. As I said: Thank you very much; I appreciate the good intentions.
However, what I’m really talking about here is a technical tool for communicating about music.
@mjw’s suggestion is a good one—thank you very much. Maybe someone else can come up with another technical solution. Right now, we’re sending each other names of songs from Roon via Messenger and then manually re-entering them into Roon. There should be an easier and more direct way to do this.

Being able to share music either in terms of playlists, or other recommendations, have been requested for years. I’m sure there is, more than one thread in the Features Request for just such options. It doesn’t have to be between family members, the same solution should exist between friends, imho.

My Dad bought me my first albums - Paula Anka and Nancy Sinatra. I was listening to the Grateful Dead then. So - maybe point him to sites to help him discover artists? Last.FM for example.

Local playlists are shared anyway, so you can just create a playlist and your son will see it in his profile

A great way to do this within a single library is with Tags. You have the option to tag Albums, Artists, Tracks, and Composers in separate or combined groups. This will let you create scratch pads of groups or tracks that you each can play from, update, search, pull from to create play lists,…

Set up a few tags:
“Pop says Classical”
“Pop likes Stones”
“Jr’s New finds”
“We both like”
“Jr’s Jenkys (jr doesn’t like)”

Also show him how to navigate with the Genre tags. Select a song he likes and then click the ovals under the album name to find similar albums/Artists. If he has any interest, he may quickly surpass you in knowledge of your own collection and help you rediscover gems you forgot you have, especially if you have a linked, outside music service.

Tags are, however, separate for each profile, so to use them one needs to share a profile, which then mixes up other things.

Edit: incorrect, see @Jay_Tee below

Tags can be shared and viewed across profiles or selected individually by owner, by any owner. They can also be “Stumbled into” by selecting a tag oval from the individual Album screen.

The Owner of the Tag can be set to “Shared (Visible to all Profiles)” and will Display in tag view for all profiles.

Also, users can separately view tags from other profiles by merely selecting the pull-down next to tag owner.

Profile A has no tags, Profile C has one tag Christmas - owner changed to Shared Tags, and J has some.

Oh, thanks for correction. Fixed above. I had looked for it but didn’t think to look for the “shared” setting under “my” tags

That is also how playlists used to work.

And i never understood why this was changed to not having the option to share a playlist or not

No Worries, I said what, but not how…

Also, you can directly select tags from another profile (ill #3 A views J’s tags), no need to use shared tags, but may help with OP’s intent…

When I share music with friends I use Spotify. Both Qobuz and Spotify apps include sharing.
