Does the issue happen with local library music, streaming service music, or both?
· *Both streaming and local* *library* music are affected.
Do you encounter any playback errors with the "System Output" Zone?
· I don't have a System Output available, but I'd like to keep troubleshooting
How is the affected Zone connected to your RoonServer machine?
· Network - WiFi
Which network audio protocol is the Zone using with Roon?
· Sonos
Does the device show up at all in Roon Settings -> Audio?
· Yes, it shows up there, but it isn't Enabled
Does the "Enable" button unlock the Zone?
· I can Enable the Zone, but the Zone disappears
Does the device play audio from another source when using the same connection?
· The device has no problems with another audio source
Have you checked that Roon is whitelisted in any firewalls?
· I've checked the firewall and the issue remains
If the device has multiple output options, do the other options work as expected?
· Multiple output types are affected
Is the device using the latest firmware as per the manufacturer?
· Firmware is up-to-date but the issue remains
What are the make and model of the affected audio device(s) and the connection type?
· Sonos on version 1 of software
Describe the issue
Have still never managed to make Roon work, despite years of trying. Now am using a Roon-branded Nucleus with just updated software.
Current problem is recurring “Lost control of Audio Device” when connecting to any of my several Sonos devices, all running on Sonos v1 software. This is a new error, but it won’t go away.
Describe your network setup
Sonos system serves as network wired ethernet hub.
This error indicates that the network handshake between the Nucleus and the Sonos endpoint has failed. If the issue is intermittent and the devices sometimes connect, common causes include WiFi interference of multicast traffic handling issues in the network hardware between Roon and Sonos. Othertimes, firmware is the cause - there’s an outdated or malfunctioning protocol in either Roon, the router, or the Sonos endpoints themselves.
First, perform due diligence on firmware. Reboot the Nucleus, the Sonos endpoints, and the router and install any updates.
Next, hardwire a single Sonos endpoint via ethernet to the same router or access point to which you’ve connected the Nucleus. Does this endpoint connect and retain a connection during playback? If so, add a second Sonos endpoint to a grouped Zone with this endpoint and re-test. Continue to add elements back in until you’ve reconstructed the original network topology.
On our end, we’ll investigate diagnostic logging from the test. That should illuminate precisely when and why the endpoints are disconnecting.
Please also share more descriptive information about your network hardware, including routers, switches, and access points.
How are your Nucleus and the Sonos endpoints configured relative to your main, upstream router? What network hardware sits in between the Sonos endpoints and the Nucleus?
Thank you for the reply. I had the above problem three out of the three days I tried using Roon last week, but today it is working. I have not made any changes. So I’ll continue using for the next few days and will update if it stops working again.
For housekeeping purposes and to maintain currency on the forums, this post will auto-close shortly.
If you encounter this issue moving forward, please create a new topic thread and include the following details:
How you’ve precisely connected the Sonos devices to the main upstream router (particularly the device serving as your SonosNet hub per your post above). Include any mesh nodes or managed switches.
In your main router firmware settings, verify that multicast forwarding, IGMP proxying, IGMP snooping, and any related settings are enabled. Let us know if this test has had any effect if you create a new topic thread.
