Reinstall "missing CODECS"

Installed ROCK and required ffmpeg file on Intel NUC in May 2024 and have been using without problems until this week. ROCK UI now shows “Missing Codecs”; not sure why. I have the ffmpeg file but cannot find where to copy it to. I cannot locate the /Data/Codecs directory. Have tried various suggestions/instructions found on Roon forum, but??? I have located three Roon-related folders In my AppData/Local directory but I find no “Data” folder in any of them. Any fresh help would be appreciated.

This sounds like a Windows location. However, you need to copy it to the ROCK.

There are instructions on the Roon help pages, but they are a bit terse. Nevertheless, I recommend reading them for context:

Recently I wrote a detailed step by step guide (as there can be more than one obstacle) for another Roon user, so I will just link it. Go to this post and scroll down a bit to the instructions in the same post. (And let me know if you encounter a problem):

Hey @mpbundy5475,

Good to see you on the community!

In the future, if you could please use our Support Typeform to fill out a proper thread, that would be very helpful. Here’s the link:

Thank you @Suedkiez for the reply here - including a detailed step-by-step to install codecs properly (We’ll have the team revisit the KB article to make it more digestable as well, we appreciate the feedback!)

Let us know if this helps you @mpbundy5475! :+1:

@benjamin Thanks. Questions are often:

  • Which file to download. Yes, the help pages already states it, but it would be worth emphasizing that yes, the amd64 is the correct format. (People get confused by this)
  • The unpacking twice often leads to questions. On Windows, I think (but not sure) that one needs WinZip or 7-Zip for untarring the tar file in the second step. And IIRC on the Mac it is different because it decompresses the *.xz automatically after download.
  • A screenshot each for the folder path on Win and Mac would help as navigating an unusual file system remotely can be a challenge for people who haven’t done it before.
  • Plus the new issue with the SMB guest access in Win 11 24H2 can get in the way now, too. (In addition to Windows sometimes not finding ROCK/Nucleus under Network automatically).

Apologies for not starting a new topic using the form. I tried using the “link” to do so however my browser (DuckDuckGo) did not like it. Thanks also for your very clear answer to my question. I did follow your steps and was able to put the ffmpeg file in the Codecs folder. I now do not get the “missing codecs” notification in the UI. With that said, I have rebooted my server two times but when I launch Roon software it cannot find the server. The Roon server is attached to my network (I can see it with 3rd party software). Ideas?

This is good

This is unrelated to the codecs.

  • Which Roon control apps are you using (Windows? Mobile on phone and/or tablet?) and is it the same with all of them?
  • When it can’t find it, does it only show the “searching” animation with the Roon logo or does it show anything else (info text, buttons)? If the latter, please post a screenshot.

Hi @mpbundy5475,
@Suedkiez’s questions will be useful for further troubleshooting. When you get the chance please let us know the answers.

I suspect both the missing ffmpeg problem and my connection issue are both the result of me running the Roon software update. I deleted the Roon app and then reinstalled it and after a couple of setup steps am now connected. Bummer is I lost all my Qobuz library items and my Qobuz playlists. Oh well; I’ll be wary of running future updates. Thanks for your help.

Sorry for the delay answering your questions.

  • I control Roon using the app on my iPhone. I also have the app installed on a desktop computer. After I added the ffmpeg file using your very clear instructions and after reporting my problem in connecting to the server I deleted and reinstalled the control app on my iPhone and that resolved my new problem.
  • I did not delete the app on my desktop and still have the connection issue there. The “Waiting for your Roon Server…” screen is displayed.

Isn’t there a button or link, „Use Another Roon Server“? What happens when you click it?

If it states that you will not be able to access the music on your old server, that’s fine. Say yes. Then it should list all Roon servers it can find, which is probably just your usual one. Select it and see if it connects then.

Hey @mpbundy5475,

Glad to hear you were able to get things sorted out!

Do you have a recent backup you can restore from? You should also be able to re-sync your Qobuz tracks and playlists after re-logging in. Is this not the case?

We were able to review a fresh diagnostic report from your Roon Server, and it looks like you were able to get playback from the issues Windows remote - are you still having issues? Let us know your status! :+1:

No recent backup with my Qobuz playlists, but Qobuz albums are still in my Roon library so I’ll just rebuild them.
