Describe the issue

Backups to remote locations don’t work

Describe your network setup

Roon server is on an Intel NUC with ROCK installed. It is connected via Ethernet to an SFR box. So is the Synology NAS to which I wish to perform backups.

Good day @Alexander_Barnell !

Our logs indicate that at that time the connection to SMB share has just dropped.

Can you please try to make a backup manually and see if it is going normally ?

If all’s good then that could be just an incident in connection.

In case it is still not available please let us know and we’ll continue investigation.

Thanks!

Regards.

Hi Alex, just tried at 4:32 PM local time. Still getting message Backup directory not available.

Hey @Alexander_Barnell,

We’re seeing the following errors around the timestamp you’ve shared:

Warn: [backup] failed to syncprepare: get backup dirs: ... Result[Status=InvalidRoot]
Warn: [broker/backups] failed sync prepare2 on FileBrowser.Entry: \\192.168.1.101, music : \RoonBackups: Result[Status=NotAvailable]
  • InvalidRoot - Roon tried to access the backup directory and couldn’t validate it as a proper Roon backup destination. This happens when:
    • The directory path exists but isn’t reachable as expected.
    • Roon cannot read/write there (permissions issue).
    • The _roon_backup_ metadata file is missing or corrupted (as seen in your log).
  • NotAvailable -The network share (\\192.168.1.101\music\RoonBackups) wasn’t mounted or available at the time of the backup. Roon sees it as disconnected or inaccessible over SMB.

In Roon → Settings → Backups → Scheduled Backups → Edit → Browse → Add Network Share then re-enter the path (\192.168.1.101\music) and credentials, then test the connection.

It’s also worth noting that storing your backups in the same location that your watched folders are watching isn’t ideal, and could lead to database issues down the road.

The best long-term solution would be to store your backups in a separate location - let me know if this makes sense! :+1:

Hi @Alexander_Barnell,

We haven’t seen a response since @benjamin shared some suggestions above, so we’re reaching out to ask if you require any further assistance here.

Thanks!

Hi Connor,

Thanks for reaching out. Evetything is working fine now. I have managed to schedule a backup on the NUC itself with a scheduled rsync task on the NAS to transfer the backups over and another backup to Dropbox with a different frequency. Thanks again to all of you for your help. You may now close this ticket. Best regards. Alex
