Remote connection issues with iPad Mini 3

Hi, I signed up a few days ago and am facing problems with the remote connection on my iPad 3. I have ensure both my core and my iPad are on the same network with the ‘accept remote’ switched on on the core, etc etc. however I am struggling to connect my remote iPad. It connects sometimes and runs fine. After a while, especially when I get back to playing music it says it can’t connect or connection failed! I’m sure this has been addressed somewhere here but I would really request a helping hand. Needless to say, this is quite frustrating.

By the way, Roon works fine on my main Apple computer.

Thanks

Sujay

Hi Sujay,

A new version 147 update should be available now on the App Store. Can you try that first?

Cheers, Greg

Thanks, Greg for a very prompt response. I will try doing so right away. In fact I did reload Roon from applications this afternoon. Let me try that again

Cheers

Hi Greg, strange! This update must have come through a few hours back. I didn’t see it this afternoon. I have just updated. Will observe and revert.

Thanks once again for your prompt response. Really appreciate on a weekend!

Cheers

Sujay

You’re welcome Sujay. Yes, the app was released just now.

Cheers, Greg

Hi Greg, looks like all’s well. The new version seemss to have done the trick. The remote is working flawlessly.
Thanks again for all the help

Sujay

Hi,

Maybe I was a little too early to proclaim victory. It’s still acting up! Let me see how it goes today.

Cheers

Hi, Are you sure that it’s an iPad 3 that you have?? [as you state above]

I don’t believe that the Roon app will work on non-64bit iPads and the iPad 3 isn’t one of those

The fact that App was available and works at times seems to indicate that you have an iPad Air or later…but just worth checking in the Settings ----> About option of your iPad

Hi, indeed, it’s an iPad 3. Just bought it a week back because it was available at a good price. I was told not much difference between the 3 and the 4 barring processor speed! But what I find strange is that it works sometimes…

Also, i am running the latest apple OS… By the way, are we saying that the Roon remote will not work on ipad3?

Yes – but it would not have installed anyway. Could it be you have an iPad mini 3? (That will run Roon for iOS just fine).

Connection problems with your iPad are usually caused by network configuration and/or slow Wifi. What router/wifi AP do you use? How is the signal strength at the location you use the iPad?

My apologies. It is an iPad mini3… That’s what I meant. Sorry. I will check my network speed, though it seems ok. Let me see the router specs etc and revert.
So iPad mini3 should be ok right?

Mini 3 is fine. Apart from processor speed – the mini 4 supports ac wifi, while the 3 is limited to n.

Apologies I lost you there. What the difference b/w AC wifi and n?

See: http://www.forbes.com/sites/gordonkelly/2014/12/30/802-11ac-vs-802-11n-wifi-whats-the-difference/#798ff9653785

It’s only relevant if your router supports ac though.

Thanks… I just discovered that my router only supports 300mbps and is a 802.11n. Would it be any good if I upgrade my router to the latest available?

Thanks for all the help

Sujay

Hi,

Just did some reading. What I have understood is that an ac router will only benefit materially if I have ac devices. Since my iPad mini 3 is n, it may not really benefit much… Though I do get conflicting views on this and some people say the speed does improve even though the device is only n.

Any experience?

Cheers

Hi Sujay,

Actually, I’ve got the opposite setup to what you’re describing. I have an older AirPort Extreme router which is n and an iPad Air 2 which is ac.

My setup works great. I am thinking of upgrading my router one day.

I don’t know if this helps.

Cheers, Greg

Hi Sujay,

Are you sure that your Roon Core machine isn’t going to sleep mode?

As you said above, you come back to listen to music and it won’t connect. That could occur if your computer went to sleep.

A wake on lan feature has been requested in the past.

Cheers, Greg

That is a possibility, Greg. Not sure what a wake on feature is though. It’s working fine at the moment. But I guess it may again act up. Let me observe and also see if upgrading my router will help.
I really want this to work because I am beginning to like Roon a lot!

Thanks
