Our team has been hard at work gathering data and doing internal testing on this issue and we wanted to provide everyone with an update:

In our recent releases we’ve been working toward improving Roon’s graphical capabilities, and unfortunately these changes appear to be causing issues on some older Android devices with certain Adreno 300-series GPUs. Our QA team (and our alpha testers) test with a wide variety of devices, but unfortunately the device that we use to test this GPU family happens to be one of the ones that’s not affected.

We were able to acquire an affected device today and reproduced the issue in-house about 30 minutes ago. As soon as we have an more information about our investigation we will be sure to keep everyone updated here.

Over the last week our team has continued to work on resolving issues impacting certain older GPUs. Roon is built on a custom UI engine and as we continue to push our graphical capabilities forward, older chipsets may struggle to keep up with the improvements in cases where their drivers are not performing properly.

We regularly test with a variety of devices new and old, but some of the recent issues affected devices roughly a decade old, or devices only used by a small fraction of our customers. While these devices have not been part of our in-house testing in the past, we make every effort to maintain compatibility even as Roon evolves and improves. This may not always be possible, but over the last 2 weeks we’ve acquired six of these older devices, with the hope that we can address the recent issues and include these devices in future testing. With the devices in-house we can see how the drivers are misbehaving and not functioning as expected so we can work around these limitations.

Our development team has already made progress addressing these issues and our QA team is hard at work on verifying these improvements. These tests will take some time due to the wide range of devices that we are testing, but we are hoping to release these improvements as soon as possible.

You have our thanks for the patience and understanding that has been shown as we work to resolve the issues on these devices.
