That’s a great loss. His recent(ish) work with the San Francisco Symphony is a great body of works, including the Mahler cycle. It was was a bucket list item to see him conduct.
What I will remember MTT for is his championing of the music of Charles Ives. I’m pretty sure he recorded more of Ives music than anyone (including Bernstein and Schermerhorn).
I’m such a fan of his playing and conducting of Gershwin’s pieces.

I was very saddened when I heard the news, I have a number of his recordings and they are all excellent. I’m particularly fond of his 1971 recording of Debussy’s Prélude À L’Après-Midi D’Un Faune with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and his Ives set with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He also made one of my all time favorite Mahler recordings, the 7th with the London Symphony Orchestra for RCA. (It’s the 7th I would pick if I had to align my “desert island 1 performance per symphony Mahler cycle”, which in real life I don’t have to do.).
Very good conductor. May he rest in peace.
