This one hits close to home.
I was lucky enough to attend a Circles Around the Sun show back in January of this year.
The band’s ability to maintain a sound greater than than the sum of its parts while each musician explored new textural and sonic ground was incredible to watch unfold. The level of individual musicianship and improvisational intuition required to play that cohesively is normally predicated by a group playing together for years. It’s astounding that Neal and the band were able to play at this level when it was a side project for all involved.
To then consider that Circles Around the Sun is just a footnote to the rest of Neal’s prolific career… Today is a sad day for music.
