RIP Spencer P. Jones

A ubiquitous presence in many influential Melbourne bands and a great loss to the local music community.

I first knew of Spencer in The Johnnies in the eighties when he started to reintroduce Country back into garage/grunge Pop with a sort of cheesy cowboy motif:

Later he was in Beasts of Bourbon with Kim Salmon and Tex Perkins, a ferocious shambling mess of a band that simply took no prisoners. Cited influences were Hank Williams, Rolling Stones (name is a play on Beast of Burden) and The Cramps. No one who saw the Beasts live ever forgot the experience:
