Why is there no way to shutdown the ROCK OS and restart it at a time to suit the user. I only listen to music between 7pm and 11pm most nights, yet I have to leave my NUC on 24/7. Can’t be hard to add a simple timer function to the OS.
You should start a feature request in Feedback > Feature Suggestions.
However, Roon OS is intended to run as a low power appliance that is on 24/7. If you want more control consider using Linux instead, or shutdown ROCK from a web browser when you have finished your listening session.

To shut it down, the remote command posted by @mjw works. Though of course simply clicking shutdown on the web admin page also does. For more convenience you can automate the shutdown command: Roon 2.65 - it was faster for a while, not so much after a while - #152 by Atiss
When the OS is shut down, a start timer in the OS won’t work. This has to be at a lower level, and therefore the BIOS has an option: enable WakeOnLAN in the BIOS and send a WakeOnLAN command from another machine. There are apps for that or you can run it from the command line.
Consider that
- Running a NUC 24/7 costs a few euros per year
- The Roon Server performs maintenance such as metadata updates even when you don’t use it actively. This can take several hours and it can affect performance, which is why Roon recently introduced an option to schedule this maintenance to a time window outside of listening hours. If you turn it on only then you use it, this maintenance will run precisely when you’d like to use it.

I guessed that, but figured I’d pass this on just in case. Hopefully in RoonOS 3.0. “Autostart” is really handy for ARC users. Cheers.
Unfortunately there is no such thing as a simple BIOS change with a NUC. You need to connect it to a monitor and keyboard and I don’t have either ( I puchased the NUC as Roon ready).
I remember having a ReadyNAS about 20 years ago that you could set to come on and switch off anytime of day you wanted. Surely Roon have programmers capable of adding this to the OS.
A NUC doesn’t come “Roon Ready”. You either install Roon OS or another OS with Roon Bridge.
RTC wake needs BIOS support and can’t be done solely by the OS. This is possible with Linux, macOS and Windows, but for an appliance intended to run 24x7, it isn’t necessary or useful.
Because Roon is made for a world with unlimited ressources.
A NUC idles at 5 W or below…

You don’t need a monitor, any modern TV will do, just hook up the NUC via HDMI.
However, a USB keyboard is essential, if you can’t borrow one Amazon sell them starting at about 10.00 Euro.
And that’s a couple of Euro a year for idle times. Cheaper than a keyboard!

For many of us BIOS changes are simple. If you’re really set on turning it off when not in use, which undoubtedly has no effect on your power bill, try a wall timer. Might crash your SSD, and the wall timer will probably draw more power than your NUC, but there’s no other choice.
As everyone has mentioned, you’re best leaving it on all the time. My guess is the number of people asking for this feature will be less than 1%, which won’t get the attention of those prioritizing enhancements.

And, corrupt your Roon database. 
I get that, but it would also be handy to reboot Roon as it slows right down after two or thrre days and requires a manual reboot. Usually find this out when I want to listen to music whiich is not ideal.
Hopefully this performance problem will be solved soon for those affected, at least the devs are optimistic and Early Access is looking good. In any case there has already been progress that solved it for some people, and more should follow if necessary.
But the reboot can be solved quite easily. If your ROCK is still RoonOS 1.0, this should work in a browser. Simply bookmark it and put a button on your browser toolbar:

“restartsoftware” should be sufficient for the performance problem because it restarts the Roon Server, I think, which is probably the culprit.
If your ROCK is an UEFI installation (RoonOS 2.x), it is a little more complicated but doable on a command line or a shortcut on iOS (dunno about Android). See here:

If using a command line script (which would work with RoonOS 1.x, too, by sending the http URL), the OS can also run it on a timer.
Of course you can also simply go to http://rock and click the server Restart button or Reboot in the shutdown menu.
