Description of Issue

I moved from using a Windows machine as the core to a ROCK.
I did this due to ARC causing constant core lockups when the core is running on Windows (There is another support ticket from me on that issue)
The ROCK hardware is new.
Followed the ROCK setup and music and database migration procedures.
Everything went very well on the migration. Everything is working great since moving to the ROCK.
This also fixed my ARC problem. I have used ARC for 16 hours straight without a hiccup even when switching between Wi-Fi and Cell data.

Backups on the ROCK are not working though.
A backup will start with snapshotting the database. I will then see a preparing message briefly and then the core restarts itself. When I look at the backup folder I can see that it has created some files but the xx directory is empty.
I have tried creating different shares to backup to as well as trying to backup to \rock\Data\Storage\InternalStorage\Backups
When the core comes back up everything is working as normal again.

I have uploaded the server logs as file [Email Redacted By Support].zip

Backups on the Windows machine that was running the core work fine.
Please help with this issue.
I don’t want to go back to the having the core on Windows after investing in the hardware to run ROCK on a NUC. I would also be returning to an ARC that crashes the core constantly.
I also cannot lose my years of data in Roon.

Thank you,
Jim Raver

You shouldn’t backup to InternalStorage anyway, as that would be gone if the disk dies or the NUC dies and takes the disk with it.

When you tried “creating different shares to backup”, where were these shares created?

And did you try backing up to, e.g., a simple USB stick attached to the NUC? (A stick is not the best medium for Roon backups and a proper USB disk would be better, but a good quality USB stick at least suffices to try if this works and so that you have at least a backup until you have a better solution)

An I am not sure if you really want your email address in your post for all the world to see, it will be harvested in no time. This is a public forum. Better to remove it, wait until someone from Roon support answers you, and then send them a private message with the email address

I just tried again with a USB stick in the ROCK.
I had the same result as above.
It looks like it gets through verifying the database then it goes back to the backup screen where ii says preparing and then the core restarts.
Operation of Roon is perfectly normal after the core finishes starting back up.

OK, that’s not good. No idea, I guess we need @support to look at logs

Hi @James_Raver ,

Thanks for reaching out and for your patience here until we were able to review your case. In the logs that you uploaded, it looked like the backup process was failing because the database validation failed due to too many files being opened on the Core. I enabled diagnostics and I am not seeing that error in your current logging. Has the issue been resolved, are you now able to backup without issue?

You can close this one.
I ended up starting over from scratch.
I restored monthly backups going back 7 months and always had the same problem so I gave up and started over.
It has been working fine since starting over but I am only about a quarter of the way done with assigning ratings and tags again. All play counts are lost though.
Thanks,
Jim
