I am currently running Roon Rock Version 1.0 (build 258) – production branch and need to upgrade to the latest Roon OS. However, I am experiencing persistent difficulties updating.
When I use the “Reinstall” function from the Roon Rock web interface, the process fails and produces the following error message:
Error
There was an error downloading Roon. Please check your internet connection.
{“status”:“Failure”,“exitcode”:11}
The server has a reliable Ethernet (eth0) internet connection.
I can successfully ping roonlabs.net from the device.
The update file roon-production.bin has been placed in the \\ROCK\Data\Reinstall directory, but the upgrade still does not proceed.
Could you advise on the correct method to force the upgrade, or provide guidance on how to resolve the update/download failure?
Thanks for writing in, and I’m sorry to hear about your issues updating!
A small side test - if you fully stop Roon Server and power down/ unplug your ROCK, then reboot and attempt to update, do you run into the same issues?
If yes, let’s test out refreshing your ROCK Roon Server database:
Yes, have done a reboot several times. Earlier, I re-formatted the OS drive and reinstall from the Rooninstaller64 file.
Today: After renaming the directory and selecting other in Roon. The new directory is created and the download starts, but appears to hang for a long time.
Here’s the message from Roon desktop: Roon Optimized Core Kit 2.0 (build 1234) production Downloading… I also tried the re-install process with the Rock web interface, but it fails with the same message as experienced before.
@Kirk_Linton
Does your NUC Bios have been put in UEFI or is it still Legacy? In the last case, you will not be able to install the latest ROCK-version, as this needs UEFI.
Kind regards, Frank.
Let’s perform a manual reinstall of the OS image, not just the app package.
Download the latest Roon ROCK OS image (2.0) from Roon’s official site.
Use Etcher or Rufus to write the .img.gz to a USB stick.
Boot your Intel NUC from that USB stick (BIOS set to UEFI, which you mentioned you already have).
Reinstall Roon ROCK using that installer.
You can start from step #3 on this KB:
Important: This reinstalls only the OS partition, leaving your internal storage drive (music storage) and your /Data share (with database/backups) untouched. Still, make sure you have a good Roon database backup before proceeding.
From diagnostics we can see another active RoonServer instance now on a Windows machine, also running an outdated version (build 1534).
It seems like you might be having manual/automatic update problems across your Roon environment. If that’s the case, then I recommend investigating whether network security might be restricting Roon traffic to/from the download server. Please ensure that Roon is exempted in any network antivirus or firewall software.
Please also check that a reliable DNS server has been assigned in the router settings administration page. We recommend Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) or QuadNine (9.9.9.9), as these are known to reliably resolve the URL associated with Roon updates/downloads.
