So it is better to lower the level from HQPlayer already before it goes out of the DAC, so that you need to attenuate less in analog domain before going out to the power amp. This is what I’d call gain optimization.

Interesting. I’m currently set as fixed -3dB HQP going into Rockna (fixed at max) and then into Diablo 333 integrated (volume control).
Does it make sense here to lower the level in HQP more and by how much?

It depends on your current amplifier’s volume setting.

You could also try it this way:

1. Set HQPlayer volume to -3 dB and turn your amplifier’s volume control to as loud as you would ever listen and leave it there
2. Turn down the volume from Roon/HQPlayer (Roon can control HQPlayer’s volume) to a comfortable listening level

This way you are still safe from too loud accidents, but you also have less loss in analog domain.
