Describe the issue

Im running roon 2.0 on a MacMINI M4, with MacOS Sequoia 15.7 after a reboot roon will not start. It fails to initialize VM. Do you habe a build which works in my situation?

Describe your network setup

It should not be a problem of my network because without reboot the system worked. The connection is a ethernet connection from the mac-mini to my laptop

Hello @Axel_Schmitz-Tewes ,

What kind of VM are you using on your MacOS? Please note that VMs are in Tinkering territory and are not officially supported. Do your RoonServer Logs contain any hints as to the errors? Does RoonServer start properly outside the VM?

Hello Noris,

It is a Mac Mini M4 with MacOS Sequoia 15.7.

There is no virtual machine in the sense you are referring to. When I try to start Roon manually, I get the error messages

axelschmitz-tewes@Mac-Mini-Roon MacOS % arch -x86_64 “/Applications/Roon.app/Contents/RoonServer.app/Contents/MacOS/RoonServer”

2025-10-13 18:50:20.018 RoonServer[1010:15862] Microsoft.macOS: Failed to initialize the VM

It seems that roon needs some virtualising framework on a Silicon Machine.

That‘s all. Do you have a solution for my problem.

Kindest regards,

Axel

Hello @Axel_Schmitz-Tewes,

Thank you for the clarification.

Please note that RoonServer should not be started manually via the Terminal command. The command you used:

arch -x86_64 “/Applications/Roon.app/Contents/RoonServer.app/Contents/MacOS/RoonServer”

forces Roon to launch under the Rosetta emulation layer and may lead to errors such as
Microsoft.macOS: Failed to initialize the VM.

RoonServer must be started via the Roon application itself, not directly from the console.
Please follow these steps:

  1. Quit any Roon or RoonServer processes that might still be running.
  2. Open the Roon app from the Applications folder (/Applications/Roon.app).
  3. Choose to use this Mac as the Roon server and log in to your account.
  4. Allow it to start and manage RoonServer automatically in the background via the taskbar.

The Roon app handles all the environment initialization needed for RoonServer on Apple Silicon.

Hi Vadim,

thank you very much. Your suggestion seems to have been the solution. After I selected the computer as the new Roon server, some time passed and I wasn’t sure, but then my installation reappeared without me having to log in again. The data was obviously still stored.

Kindest regards,
Axel
