Latest version seems to quit randomly on MacOS 14.x if it's in the background. It doesn't seem to be a crash as there's no crash dialog that pops up. Roon 2.56 build 1582. I haven't yet figured out how to reduce a test case, but it happens a lot, and just started doing it after I updated.
Apologies for the lack of information in the original ticket. The UI for creating a ticket is difficult and extremely frustrating.
Some more detail:
My Roon Core is on a mac mini, and I most often use the Roon app on my mac studio, both of which are hardwired on the LAN. Roon on the Mac Mini stays operational, works ‘as normal’. What is odd is Roon on my mac studio will silently quit after some period, even when it’s being used to play something to my streaming device (Holo Audio Red, also hardwired on the LAN). I haven’t experimented to see if this behaviour exists when trying to play music to speakers directly attached to the mac studio (B&W MM1s via USB).
The audio is never interrupted. The app just quits silently. No crash dialog pops up. It’s really weird!
I’d be happy to check the logs, but I have forgotten where they’re located.
Weird update (maybe related??) It seems Roon no longer sees my MM1s attached to my mac studio. The system sees it just fine, as I can play audio through them, change the source to something else, and change it back, and still have sound play through them. Indeed, it doesn’t show the “Connected to this computer” (or whatever it was called) section at all.
Not only does it not see the MM1s but it also doesn’t see my USBPre2, nor the internal audio. The whole section is removed. Manually quitting and re-opening the app doesn’t change this.
Thanks for the additional information @CM_Harrington - sorry to hear your issues persist.
We’re not seeing the mac studio in your account admin, would you be able to send over a set of manual Roon logs from this machine?
Please use the directions found here and send over a set of logs to our File Uploader? Once logs have been uploaded, please let us know so that we can check the server for your files, thanks!
We’ve identified the crash trace, and it aligns with a known issue our team has already worked on a fix for - that should be included in the next update or so.
As a quick test - let’s see if refreshing your instance of Roon (not Roon Server) may help:
Ok, so I renamed my entire Roon folder (in ~/Library), and the existing compy of Roon in my /Applications folder, and downloaded it ‘fresh’. Unfortunately, the issue of the app not seeing my local audio options remains. I can still see the Connected to Roon Server, Roon Ready, Roon Tested, and HQ player sections in the Audio settings, but the section for local audio devices isn’t there. Interestingly, it can see my machine as an AirPlay 2 capable network device, twice. (see attached screenshot)
Edit: I haven’t had had the fresh app long enough to see if it silently quits/crashes yet, but it also seems you’ve got a fix for that in the pipeline.
Got it, thank you! For your missing audio devices - can you please navigate to macOS System Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network, and make sure Roon and Roon Server are allowed.
If it is already enabled, toggle it off and on again. Then reboot your Mac, and see if the same issue persists.
OK, that’s really strange. I haven’t done anything, and didn’t even notice they reappeared until I saw this reply. As of right now, they are here. Also, it seems the app hasn’t crashed (it would consistently crash every few minutes, although I could never narrow down the issue as to why/what caused it).
So I am cautiously optimistic. I’ll try to play stuff through them throughout the day, and see how things go.
Thanks for the update @CM_Harrington - definitely keep us posted on how things perform.
We do still have a fix that is ready to be released around Roon crashing on macOS devices, so if that pops up again, I’m confident the fix will be out to you very soon.
Ok, so that was quick… I was able to force the local zones to disappear again simply by quitting Roon, and launching it again.
The problem of course is I can’t get them to come back
Edit: More precise description of what I did:
(note) Generally, I keep the app open at all times, as I have a lot of RAM, and I like to listen to music at any moment, so why not.
Since I discovered the local zones magically came back, I switched to my MM1s, played some music, stopped playback after a time, then hours later came back to it, switched to another end point (the Red into Cyan2 zone), and without playing anything, quit the app… just to test if the local zones would still be there.
Unfortunately, after re-launching the app, the local zones were no longer available.
Aaaaand… now it’s back?? I kept the app open since I last wrote (but haven’t played anything), so I don’t understand why it would suddenly return, but the local zones are now back… for now.
I am going to try and experiment a bit to see if I can get a repeatable test case (but also I kiiiinda don’t want to mess with it as they may not come back!)
Update: I can reliably get them to disappear if I simply quit the app. It is currently unclear if quitting the app with a local zone selected will trigger the disappearance, or if I need to be currently controlling a remote zone when I quit the app:
Setup: App is open, set to a local zone (my desktop MM1s)
Change zone to something remote. In this case Red to Cyan2. (note, playing anything isn’t necessary)
Quit the app.
Reopen the app, click on the zone list, and note that the local zones have disappeared (again).
There’s a fix in Early Access for a crash that can occur on any operating system when attempting to click on search results within the Roon GUI. There’s an additional fix for a related crash undergoing internal testing that has not yet been released.
This would be a separate problem from the device discovery issue with networked Zones.
What device are you using in the screenshot you just shared showing the list of Zones? Is this your RoonServer machine, or another Mac?
According to the diagnostics that last reached our server, the Mac Mini hosting your RoonServer is running MacOS Catalina (MacOS 10.15.7) - is this the machine to which you were referring in your original post, or is that a separate Roon Remote running MacOS 14?
Is the switch you’ve mentioned in your initial post a managed switch? Please ensure multicast forwarding is enabled in the admin settings, if so.
We’ll watch for your response and move from there. Thank you!
