· Dear Roon Labs Support Team,

I am a long-time Roon user holding a Lifetime License, for which I paid approximately $800. I am writing to formally express my dissatisfaction regarding the automatic update to Roon 2.65 / 2.66 (Build 1653/1658), released on April 27, 2026.

Without any prior warning, this update was pushed automatically to my system — a QNAP TS-251D NAS running QTS — and immediately rendered my Roon Server completely non-functional. The server status changed to "Stopped" and could not be restarted by any means.

The core issues I experienced:

1. No advance warning that this update would break compatibility with QNAP QTS systems
2. No option to defer or decline the update before it was applied
3. No automatic rollback or fallback mechanism
4. The only solution — migrating to a Docker container — required significant technical knowledge, several hours of troubleshooting, and put my entire music database of 81,000 tracks at risk

I find it unacceptable that a paid lifetime customer is forced into a major infrastructure migration without any notice, guidance, or safety net. A simple pre-update compatibility check or a warning message would have prevented hours of frustration.

Given the severity of this disruption and the premium price I paid for a lifetime license, I would like to formally request:

- A written acknowledgment of the issue and an apology
- Compensation in the form of an extended subscription credit, merchandise, or another gesture of goodwill
- A commitment that future breaking updates will include advance warnings and a manual opt-in process for NAS users

I remain a fan of the Roon product itself, but this experience has seriously damaged my trust in Roon Labs as a company. I hope you will take this feedback seriously.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Kind regards Mario

Do you subscribe to the email newsletter? This was indeed announced in early April in the email newsletter, but it was buried at the bottom…Not saying that communication couldn’t have been better, but the newsletter did in fact proactively announce it.

@dreive, I have moved your post to Feedback since you do not appear to be seeking technical support. Roon staff read Feedback, but may not respond.

Since the Roon Server package no longer works, please switch to the official Docker image to run Roon Server on your NAS.

You maybe right, but you think that all customers can read your newsletters in detail ? Also you send out much of unless news - we can´t all think about. For me as IT project manager, its an amazing error that you don´t put any warnings or checks into you update routine - so that you crashes maybe 1.000 of your users Roon NAS server.. so please do a better QS check on your major versions… thanks mario

Please note that neither @DDPS nor I represent Roon. We are community members and Roon subscribers.

Whilst I do understand your frustration, and believe there is much room for improvement, as an IT professional, I am surprised that you installed an update without referring to the Release Notes first.

thanks @mjw, but it was an automatically update by starting the core - no further information or hint of an release note - maybe as you say in the newsletters… also I wonder me as I wrote this mail direct to Roon - and now its in the forum… ok. then we have fun all hear

I have done it today.. thanks for notice and also the move of my post. had not in mind that it was posted here in the forum, as I wrote it to the Roon support mail address….

This is a user managed setting. Go to Roon Settings → About, and then for each device, click the ellipsis, and choose how updates are handled.

many thanks, it was set up for the client for asking… but for the core as automatic :frowning: ..

FYI: There is a setting (Settings/About/Gear for the Roonserver) that details how/when updates are applied..

As you can see, I run with all my RoonServers set to “Ask before downloading any updates”. That gives me time to review the posted update notes on the Forums before applying.

And FYI, release notes are always posted here, and you can subscribe (top right button) to this category to receive a notification whenever something new gets posted:
