Roon app cannot be reinstalled or opened after update (ref#YMB0AF)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· None of the above quite fits

Tell us what's going on

· Roon updated and now I can not open roon through my app shortcut. I have followed every suggestion through threads and customer advice. Nothing works. I finally deleted every and all roon download from my laptop and tried reinstalling as instructed...still getting the same pop up window saying I can't install due to roon still being open somewhere. It's been 2 weeks since the update and this is unacceptable

Hello @amernuck45,

I completely understand your frustration. Being locked out of your music for two weeks after a routine update is incredibly aggravating, but we can definitely get this sorted out for you right now.

Looking at the screenshot you provided, the error message “Please quit all instances of RoonServer before continuing…” tells us exactly what is happening. Even though you deleted the Roon application files from your drive, the actual Roon Server “background process” is still actively running invisibly in your Windows system memory. The installer detects this running process and blocks the installation to prevent file corruption.

To fix this, we just need to kill those lingering background processes so the installer has a clean slate. You can do this in one of two ways:

Option 1: The Quick Restart

The easiest method is to completely reboot your laptop.

  • Click the Windows Start button, click the Power icon, and explicitly choose Restart.
  • (Note: Do not just choose “Shut down” or close the lid, as Windows 11 often uses “Fast Startup” which preserves background memory states during a standard shutdown. A full “Restart” clears the memory completely).

Option 2: Use Task Manager

If you don’t want to restart, you can manually force the processes to close:

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc on your keyboard to open the Windows Task Manager.
  • In the Processes tab, scroll down the list and look for anything named Roon, RoonServer, or RoonAppliance.
  • Right-click on each Roon-related process you find and select End task.

Next Steps

Once you have either restarted the PC or ended the tasks manually, double-click your downloaded RoonInstaller64.exe file again. The installation should now breeze right through without triggering that popup error.

Give that a try and let us know if you are able to successfully install and get back to your music!

Thank-you so very much. I’m not very literate with computers and the rabbit hole was deep. I am officially in the install process.

Quick question…should I allow the app toske changes to my device?

Also, searching for Roon Server for a long time. Select a different server option states I will not be able to access my previous music

If you choose select a different server it will then present you with a list of whatever Roon servers the program can see on the network.

Providing your server is in the list it is completely safe to choose it to finish off the process.

I just wanted to again express my sincere appreciation for the help. I am again seshing with great joy. It is a way of life for me and I’ve missed my life giving library. Cheers
