Roon app issues on Mac Studio with Nucleus Titan and Synology NAS (ref#42CCU6)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· Roon is slow, freezing or won’t start

Roon is slow, freezing or won’t start

· Roon is stuck updating or installing

Tell us what's going on

· Good morning dear ROON Specialists
I'm a very proud owner of the latest ROON Nucleus Titan with internal 8TB storage! So far everything is running perfectly too!
As I'm needing more storage I've added a Synology NAS DS225+ with 16TB resp. with RAID 1 just 8TB!
Both Nucleus + NAS are in the same Network, I can see them in my Router too!!!! Both have valid IP addresses as well!!!
When I'm starting ROON APP on my latest Mac Studio I firstly can't see some data, just the blinking black "ROON Sign", then suddenly the usual pic without any data, then a blue circle turning around, then after a while the message "Uh oh, something's not right", then the black ROON Sign again!
When the standard app without data appears then I've got a chance to go to setting/storage + I can see that both ROON Server + Synology NAS are scanning relatively fast their files, with Roon Server currently about 921'000 + with Synology about 34'000.... + then suddenly the pic with "Uh oh, something......" appears again......
This happens for about more than a week + I can find a solution too! Did many restarts too of all Router, ROON Server + Synology!!! All are visible in the same Network too with a valid IP Address as well!!!
I just guess that ROON Server + Synology NAS are still validating or qualifying my many files of more than 10 TB too!
But I'm not a technician who can verify it too!
So I hope you can help me + give me an adequate answer too!
Thank you very very very much for your support!
Kind regards
Hanspeter

· ROON Nucleus Titan 8TB + Synology NAS DS225+ 8TB

Hello @Hanspeter_Dettwiler,

Congratulations on the new Nucleus Titan! That is a fantastic machine, and I completely understand wanting to expand your storage with that Synology NAS.

Your suspicion is absolutely correct: Roon is overwhelmed by the scanning process, but we can see exactly why it is happening. Looking at your network share settings, the path is currently set to \\Synology-DS225\home.

This means Roon is pointed to the root “home” directory of your NAS. Because Roon is designed to deeply analyze every file it sees, pointing it to a root directory means it is trying to scan and ingest every single document, photo, system file, and backup stored on your entire NAS—not just your music. This massive flood of non-audio data is exhausting the system and causing the app to crash with that “Uh oh” message.

Let’s stop that runaway scan and get your system stable again:

1. Disconnect the NAS

For now, either power down the Synology NAS completely or unplug its Ethernet cable. We need to temporarily physically block Roon from accessing it.

2. Restart the Nucleus Titan

With the NAS disconnected, give your Nucleus Titan a reboot. You can do this by quickly pressing the power button on the back (do not hold it down) to shut it down, waiting a few seconds, and pressing it again to turn it back on.

3. Remove the Incorrect Path

  1. Once the Titan is back online, open the Roon app on your Mac Studio. Because the NAS is unreachable, the scanning will fail and the Roon app should now remain stable.
  2. Navigate immediately to Settings > Storage.
  3. Find the Synology folder (\\Synology-DS225\home), click the three dots () next to it, and select Remove (or Disable).

Next Steps:

Once that root folder is removed from Roon, you can plug your Synology NAS back in and turn it on.

To add your music safely, make sure all your audio files are inside a specific, dedicated folder on the NAS (for example, a folder named “Music”). When you go to Settings > Storage > Add Folder in Roon again, ensure the network path points only to that specific sub-folder (e.g., \\Synology-DS225\Music).

Give these steps a try and let us know if your Mac Studio app stabilizes so you can get back to enjoying your Titan!

Dear Vadim + all your support team

You are just the greatest + the best!!! Everything is working again + I’m that happy too!!!

It was indeed just a detail but you was the specialist who could find the mistake too!!! I’m that proud I’ve bought the new ROON Nucleus Titan whereas with my former model I had really bad luck too as it couldn’t be repaired again: mistakes/bug on the platine….

So thank you very much again, have a good week too + for me ROON is simply the best!!

Hanspeter Dettwiler

Dear Vadlm, good morning

After your advice everything worked perfectly!! I could see all data both from ROON Nucleus Titan + Synology NAS!

But this morning the app isn’t able to get my ROON again! Can see ROON Nucleus Titan with the correct IP address 192.168.1.113 in my Network…

Why? Thank you!

Hanspeter

Hello @Hanspeter_Dettwiler,

Thank you for your patience. Looking at the latest system diagnostics, we can see exactly what is keeping the system from stabilizing. There are three items we need to address:

1. The Synology ‘home’ folder is still mounted. The system reports show that the //Synology-DS225/home directory is still actively connected. Because this is a root directory containing all your NAS data (system files, backups, photos, etc.), Roon is exhausting its memory attempting to index everything.

  • Please power off the NAS, reboot your Nucleus Titan, and then remove/disable the home folder in Settings > Storage. Only after this is done, reconnect the NAS and add only the specific sub-folder where your audio files live (e.g., //Synology-DS225/Music).

2. Library Size and Scans. With 7TB on your internal drive and another 7TB on the NAS, you are managing a massive library. Could you provide a rough estimate of how many total music tracks you have? Indexing this much data is a heavy operation. If the library structure is complex, we need to ensure you aren’t pointing Roon at non-audio directories, as this multiplies the processing time exponentially and Titan is sufficient for this size.

3. Security Warning: Open Router Port. We noticed constant, unauthorized connection attempts from external IP addresses hitting your Nucleus Titan over Port 22 (SSH). This indicates that Port 22 is exposed to the public internet via your router. This is a significant security risk. Please check your router settings immediately and remove any port forwarding rules for Port 22. Your Nucleus should not be accessible from the outside world this way.

Please let us know how the system behaves once that Synology root folder is removed and we can confirm the library size!

Hello @Hanspeter_Dettwiler,

Just checking in on this, were you able to power down the Synology, reboot the Nucleus Titan, and remove the Synology home share from Storage before adding only the specific music folder back in? We also asked for a rough count of your total tracks, and to confirm that Port 22 is no longer being forwarded on your router since we saw those SSH connection attempts. If you have an update on any of that, let us know, thanks.

Good morning Vadim

Nothing is working with me anymore!!! I did all your steps resp. your advices too! Synology NAS completely disconnected + turned off since 3 days!!! + my ROON Nucleus Titan has got a stable + correct IP Address again: 192.168.1.111 I’m seeing the base screen with ‘"Hi, Hanspeter…’" Can see that the server is scanning + storing a lot of files too! But still no albums or other music information visible!!! Please help me!!! Since days + now about one week without music too! I’m very unhappy that my server doesn’t work properly even as ALONE too!!! The device shouldn’t be that sensitive too!!! I think there is a software bug too as before the device was working perfectly too!!!

Thank you very much + have a good day too!!!

Hi @Hanspeter_Dettwiler,

Thanks for the update and additional information! Our team was able to review a fresh diagnostic report from your Nucleus, and as a next troubleshooting step, could you please reboot your Nucleus fully, twice.

And with that, can you please also answer the question from earlier:

Are you stating that you have ~400k tracks both on the internal SSD within your Nucleus and an additional 400k tracks via your network share on your NAS?

The double reboot should help you with most of your issues, but certainly let us know the above, and if that is correct. Thank you! :folded_hands:

Dear Vadim

Thank you very much for your support! I’ve followed your advice + did twice reboot my ROON Nucleus Titan but without any success! What is strange: Nucleus is scanning more than 900k files totally but on the Nucleus internal storage there are only about 462k files now!!! I guess that the other about 500k stems from Synology NAS probably when it was earlier connected to Nucleus! I didn’t use + connect it with Nucleus anymore since I had problem to integrate Synology NAS in ROON too → See 3 attachments too!

So on ROON Nucleus Titan’s internal storage + on Synology NAS are stored 500k each, 1’000k in total!

I hope with these details we can solve finally the problem too!

Kind regards

Good morning dear Vadim

This morning the same pics from my ROON App on my iPhone 14 Pro! No improvements so far! On the rubrik Storage I could see again that Roon is scanning files up too 823’846 files too then again the two ‘"error’" messages as attached!

Don’t know if it would make sense to reinstall the ROON Program on my Mac Studio too!

Mac Studio + Nucleus are on the the same Network, visible on the Router too + both with a valid IP address too, Nucleus’s one 192.168.1.111

Sent the above information just to update you!!!

See my 3 attachment below too!

Kind regards

Dear Vadim

Why is my Nucleus Titan scanning 827’612 files whereas I had just about nearly 500’000 on my internal storage too???

And do you know roughly how long it will need to solve my problem too?

Kind regards
