Description of Issue
After working fine for a week, today Roon Core will not play NAS files via Roon app on Macbook or iPhone. After trying to play a NAS file, Roon will no longer stream via Qobuz. If restart the app, streaming via Qobuz works fine again - as long as you don’t try to play a NAS file.
Curiously, playing the same files through ARC works perfectly. I can play NAS files on my iPhone with ARC, but cannot play on my iPhone using Roon App.
I have restarted Roon on the Nas. Rebooted the entire Nas. Rebooted the Mac and iPhone. Reinstalled Roon on the Mac. Removed the local music folder from the Core and re-added it.
Sounds like an internal managed networking or Wi-Fi issue with the UniFi system. Somethings blocking Roon communications. Simplify your network back to router without switch. Or reboot the network gear.
Although I wouldn’t rule it out just yet, this does not sound like a network issue to me. If it were network related, why would Qobuz streaming via Roon work up to the moment that streaming a file from disk is being attempted.
To me this sounds more like a potential disk issue with the NAS. Although that does not explain why you would be able to stream the track via ARC. I don’t know the architecture of ARC, but potentially tracks are being cached locally. Do you have any local tracks that you have not played in a long time that you could try playing through ARC?
Can you also share some details on the configuration of your NAS? Are you running with the standard 4GB memory or have you added more RAM? What about your disk setup? Are you running 4 drives? Are these spinning disks or SDD? How are they configured? Is this a single RAID volume or is there another setup?
It is recommended that the Roon application and it’s database are installed on an SDD. Your music can be on spinning disks. If you are indeed have both the Roon database and your music on the same spinning disks, this might explain some bottleneck issues.
The NAS is stock DS with 4 cores and 4GB RAM. The storage is a 3-drive SHR (Raid) config - all spinning disk. I’ve read the database needs to be on solid state, but I’m trying to push through my trial window. If I keep it Roon, I’ll for sure the DB to a better drive.
I moved the NAS and plugged in my Mac directly to the Ethernet ports on the DMP (bypassing the switch and wifi). No change.
After more trial and error, I’ve confirmed local MP3 files play fine, but local AAC files do not (again, they work fine with ARC, just not the app). Its possible that my statement that it had been working fine was wrong - I could have coincidentally only tried MP3 files until yesterday. This leads me to the ffmpeg issue that I’ve seen referenced in many posts. So…
I had already found those issues and tried to remediate, but they all reference placing the file in a directory that does not exist with my installation (RoonOnNas), leading me to believe it was a DSM 7.x fix, not a DSM 6.x fix. Maybe I’m missing something. I’ll focus on this for now.
I think so too, but all the fixes I’ve seen reference placing the updated ffmpeg file into a directory structure that does not exist. I think I’m not finding the right fix for my setup. Still looking…
Since the folder does not exist, I tried creating one here:
\RoonServer\RoonOnNas\bin
and I put the ffmpeg file from John Van Sickle in that folder. No improvement. This doesn’t feel like the right solution. How would the NAS know its here? I’m missing something.
I also found a community package for ffmpeg 6 and installed it from the DSM Package Center. Also no improvement.
I rebooted the NAS between each of those attempts.
Hey, guys. Quick update… I’ve tried a few other solutions but have been unable to resolve the problem. My free trial just expired so I am unable to troubleshoot further.
Thanks for trying to help me with this. With the communities help, I was able to solve a number of other issues successfully. This seems like a great group and hope to re-enter at some point.
We’re sorry to hear that you didn’t have a chance to restore playback before your trial ended. I’m tagging our @accounts team, who can assist with offering another trial.
In the meantime, we’d be happy to figure out what went wrong with local library storage on the NAS. If you reactivate your trial and install Roon, your NAS should become visible to our servers, and we can request automatic diagnostic logging that should illuminate if you have a disk drive issue on the machine.
