Roon app on iMac and iPad not playing tracks, iPhone working (ref#RHP5VC)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· None of the above quite fits

None of the above quite fits

· App interface looks or behaves oddly

Tell us what's going on

· Roon app on my iMac & iPad will not play selected tracks. App on my iPhone will play tracks. Roon ARC works. I assume problem was with the iMac app so I deleted app and went to app store to reload the app, but could not find the Roon app.

Tell us about your home network

· I have a Nucleus Rev B (purchased 4/4/20) with Cambridge Magic Dac and six speaker zones. I previously used Roon app on my iMac (MacOS Tahoe 26.5.2), iPad Pro (iOS version 26.5.2), & iPhone 17 (iOS 26.5.2). Everything worked fine when I left town for 8 days, when I returned Roon system was down and MagicDac was not powered. Powered up system and Dac, and found the Roon app on iMac and iPad would select track but it would not play. iPhone app can still play music

Hello @Steve_Sennewald ,

Welcome back to the forum. Just to clarify, this is for the same zone, but the iPhone works playing to that zone and the iMac/iPad will not play to that same zone?

When you refer to “selected tracks”, does this mean that other tracks work as expected, except for specific ones? Can you please let us know the exact local time + date + track that is next impacted? We’ll enable diagnostics for your account and check the error logging.

That is correct. Roon app on my iPhone will play to any zone. Roon app on my iMac and iPad will not play into any zone. The iMac and iPad apps appear normal and will allow me to select tracks from my library, but when I select Play there is no sound.

I just tried again to play tracks with iMac app at 3:00pm Mountain Standard time on July 24, with the same result: no sound. I then tried with my iPhone app and heard normal sound.

Noris, I have a theory why the Roon app works on my iPhone, but has stopped working on my iMac and iPad.

Recently Qobuz sent me a notification that some features of their app could stop working on my iMac because it had Apple silica (chips). It appears there is no problem with the Qobuz app, but it got me to thinking.

The Roon app still works on my iPhone which has a TSMC chip, but the iMac and iPad Pro (3rd generation) both use Apple chips. Could that me the problem which started around the last Roon software update?

Just a thought. Appreciate your helping getting the Roon app functional on my other two devices. The iPhone screen is so small that it is inconvenient to view my library and select music for listening.

Hey @Steve_Sennewald,

Thanks for the extra detail and for the theory, that’s a reasonable thing to wonder, but I can put your mind at ease: this isn’t related to Apple Silicon vs. other chips. Your iMac and iPad are perfectly capable of running Roon. We pulled fresh diagnostics from your Nucleus and the logs point to something more fixable.

The good news first: your Nucleus, your library, Qobuz, and your DacMagic and HDMI zones are all healthy. The server has been playing to them without a hitch. That’s why the iPhone works.

What’s failing is very specific: when you press play on the iMac or iPad and the selected zone is that device’s own speakers, the Nucleus tries to open an audio connection to it and gets refused or dropped. On the iMac the connection briefly opens and then drops repeatedly before giving up; on the iPad it’s refused outright. The iPhone doesn’t have this problem. That pattern almost always means the device’s Local Network permission (and possibly a firewall setting) got reset, which commonly happens after the kind of OS updates that ran while you were away.

A few things to try, in order:

 1. iPad: Settings → find Roon in the app list → make sure Local Network is turned on.
 2. iMac: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network → enable Roon. While you're there, check System Settings → Network → Firewall; if it's on, make sure it isn't blocking incoming connections for Roon.
 3. Reinstalling the Mac app: Roon for Mac isn't in the Mac App Store, which is why you couldn't find it there. You can download it directly from roon.app.
 4. Quick test in the meantime: on the iMac or iPad, tap the zone picker and choose your DacMagic zone (rather than the iMac's or iPad's built-in speakers), then press play. That zone is confirmed working, so this should give you sound right away and confirm we're on the right track.
 5. It's also worth restarting your router, your iMac's network address has been shifting, and a fresh start clears that up.
Give those a try and let me know how the iMac and iPad behave afterward. If anything's still stuck, tell me the exact date, time, and zone you tried and we'll pull diagnostics again. 🙏

Thank you Benjamin for your clear instructions. The Roon AP on all three devices now work.

The Local Network and Firewall settings looked correct, but when I checked the DacMagic zone I found that I had two options labeled DacMagic. I switched to the other DacMagic zone and immediately had music. Thanks again

Hey @Steve_Sennewald,

Great to hear everything is working now. Switching to the other DacMagic zone did the trick, so we can mark this one for closure. Enjoy the music!
