Roon app on Windows not opening, shows 'not responding' error (ref#85EEB3)

What’s happening?

· My Roon software won't start up

How can we help?

· I am experiencing freezes or crashes

· My Roon software won't start up

Describe the issue

It had been fine for months, but now the Roon app in Windows more often than not just doesn’t open successfully. I get a white window that quickly turns to “not responding” that I have to kill.

What’s baffling is that sometimes (rarely) it works, but I cannot ascertain the circumstances in which it does so. The server is running, I can always access Roon successfully via my phone app.

Describe your network setup

I have two WiFi networks (in the UK). One with BT and the other with Three 5G.

Hey @Phillip_Reeves,

Thanks for writing in, and sorry to hear about your issues running Roon remote on the same windows running Roon Server!

As a quick first troubleshooting step, can you double-check your Windows defender rules?

Since you are using a Windows PC, I would verify that both Roon.exe and RAATServer.exe have been added as exceptions to your Windows firewall.

You can use these instructions to add the exceptions and the executables themselves would be located in your Database Location/Application folder path.

I would also add these exceptions to any Antivirus or other Firewall blocking applications you may have and ensure that you connected to your network via a Private network, not a Public one, see this guide for more information.

Let me know if this changes any of the behavior - thank you! :+1:

Hi Benjamin,

I’m sorry to say that I’ve made the changes you suggested and the problem persists.

To be clear:

  • Windows Defender firewall didn’t require changes (I had already allowed exceptions for both the Roon app and server)
  • I did need to switch to a Private network, rebooted and no change I’m afraid

I’m still able to access the server and control playback from my Android phone app with no problems.

Any ideas?

Many thanks for your assistance.
Phillip

Something that just happened:

I quit the Roon server, then attempted to start the Windows app - and it worked! But I’m loathed to assume this is the solution, the server obviously starts with Windows, not the app typically.

Hello @Phillip_Reeves,

Thank you for confirming and for the additional details!

Just to check — have there been any recent Windows updates or driver updates on your system around the time the issue started?
Sometimes, certain system updates (especially graphics or .NET-related) can interfere with how the Roon app starts up.

Could you please follow the steps below so we can take a closer look?

  1. Check your recent Windows updates:
  • Press Win + R, type control update, and hit Enter.
  • Click “View update history” and let us know if you see any updates installed recently (especially in the last 1–2 weeks).
  1. Collect Event Viewer logs:
  • Press Win + R, type eventvwr.msc, and press Enter.
  • In the left panel, navigate to:
    Windows Logs > Application
  • Look for any Error or Warning entries that appear around the time you try to launch Roon.
  • Right-click the relevant entries → Save Selected Events… and attach them here.

This will help us identify whether something in the system is blocking Roon from starting properly.

Thank you again for your patience, Phillip — we’ll review the logs and get back to you as soon as we have more information.

Hello @Phillip_Reeves

Thank you for the screenshots, but there is not so much useful information from the Event Viewer. There is the “Save All Events As” button. Please save it and attach it here.

How can I attach it? It’s not obvious to me I’m afraid!

Hey @Phillip_Reeves,

No problem at all! Here is a step-by-step that should help:

  1. Right click on the  Application  subsection and pick  Filter Current Log…  from the context menu
  2. On the  Filter  tab for the  Logged  section pick a parameter  Last 30 days  and press  OK
  3. Right click on the Application subsection again and pick  Save filtered log file as..  from the context menu
  4. Enter the log file name, for e.g. Roon_USERNAME , and press Save
  5. Upload the Event Viewer logs here and let us know once you’ve done so:

Thank you!

I’ve submitted the log as instructed:

Filename is “Phillip_Reeves Log.evtx”

Hello @Phillip_Reeves,

Thank you for the update.

I’ve shared your report with our R&D team. Based on the diagnostic data, your Roon Server appears to be up and running. It seems that the issue is limited to the Roon Remote on your Windows PC.

Could you please confirm whether you’re able to connect to your Roon Server using your phone or any other remote device while on the same network?

As previously mentioned, the server appears to be fine. I can connect from my Android phone, it’s the Windows app that is erratic. I have it running now, but were I to reboot I guarantee it’s not reliable and unlikely to start correctly.

I hope that’s clear? Happy to chat further.

Thanks @Phillip_Reeves! I believe we have everything we need to investigate this further. Thanks for your ongoing patience in the meantime!

If I can but in, I have the same problems and it started after the following updates Preview update (KB5067036) and .NET Framework Preview update (KB5067931)
Thanks
Mike

Sorry should have said that this is only happening when trying to connect to Roon server from a remote windows laptop, Roon server is on another windows machine and that works fine after the W11 updates.
