Roon ARC 1426 Android drops out in background [Investigation]

Since I updated to the latest build it works if Arc is in the foreground and even if I lock the phone but if I have the phone open and bring any othe App to the front Arc will stop afer a minute or 2 and I have to go back in and restart

EDIT

Gone back to an earlier build and all working again

After most recent updates it’s started again. As soon as ARC is in background it runs for a few minutes then shuts down!

Thanks for reporting @Philip_Read could you provide a timestamp from the past week for when exactly this was happening? We will look into logs.

Hi, @Philip_Read, could you, please, provide an answer to the following questions:

  1. Am I getting it right that when this occurs Arc will stop afer a minute or 2 and I have to go back in and restart in case music was playing it stops?
  2. Does it happen only when you are backgrounding the app while playing music?
  3. Does it matter if you have a DAC connected or it does not depend on which output type is used?

Thanks!

Hi,

Apologies for the late reply! Unfortunately I deleted everything and reinstalled all the latest early access Apps and it’s back working again.

  1. Yes
  2. Yes. When Roon is kept at the front and the phone fully awake and lit up it works fine
  3. I only use it with a Chord Mojo attached

Thank you for your replies, @Philip_Read, our dev team is working on an improvement in this area, it will be out with the next EA build.

Hi, @Philip_Read, we released a new EA build which contains fixes in the area you complained about. Could you, please, check if you are still seeing issues on your end?

Thanks!

This is definitely still happening in v284 (production). It’s inconsistent though, it’s not happening all the time.

This happens to me too on B286. Usually only with Bluetooth earbuds. Do something else on my phone and the music will stop. Open Arc again and it starts back up.

Hi, @mackid1993, could you, please, provide an answer to the following questions:

  1. Is playback just paused and you are able to resume it without opening the app via the now playing notification?
  2. Am I getting it right that when you say “Open ARC again and it starts back up” you mean that you return back to the app and unpause the previously active playback session? Or does Roon ARC crash and when you return to it it displays a splash screen (logo)?

Thanks!

It doesn’t pause. Audio simply drops out, opening the app back to the foreground immediately brings audio back.

Got it, thank you for the reply, so the track goes forward but no sound is coming out? Could you, please, reproduce this issue once more and let us know about the timestamp?

Thanks!

I just reproduced it at 10:03 am EST 8/7/2024.

The music doesn’t advance but it doesn’t pause. It just stops until ARC is reopened. I’ve found it only happens when this is disabled in the Android settings. I changed this to help with the long reported battery drain issues that still affect my device.

I have a similar problem with ARC frequently stopping playback, especially when in the background, but it won’t resume when I bring the app back to the foreground. I have to force close ARC and then it usually (though not always) will work again. It’s pretty frustrating.
Galaxy S22 w/ 256gb, ~28k tracks. Not using a DAC, usually a bluetooth connection to earbuds or car.

SOLVED: restarted the phone, it’s fine now.

This is happening to me in 9/2025 on ARC 1.69.369, android 16 s curity update 8/2025.

As soon as I switch back to the ARC app it’ll start right up again - what do you mean instopped playing? I’m playing, been doing it this whole time!

Maybe I need to allow this thing to run unemcumbered in the background. I’ll see if I can find a setting for that.

I have this same issue, daily when starting and playing an album on Roon Arc after around 2 or 3 minutes, it stops playing and the application has been closed in the backgound. Then I restart it and it works again for a longer period without interuption. The next day I have the same issue all over again. ‘allow background used’ is unchecked and no specific battery optimization on the phone. Version 1.70.373

Could be related to the notification issues that have been reported?

I sometimes have an issue where the notification doesn’t get created, so playback only works when the app is in the foreground

I think you’re on the right track here. I hadn’t been using Roon ARC much recently (because I mostly listen to music at home these days and generally listen to podcasts on the go). I’m wondering if this is a symptom of Android trying to revoke permissions from unused apps and Roon not successfully renegotiating permission requests or something. For ARC I toggled notification permission off, back on, and restarted the app and it’s playing fine in the background now with a media playback card in my notification shade. I did have unrestricted battery enabled for ARC and it was still happening. I’ve unchecked “Manage app if unused” for now to hopefully prevent this from happening again.

I use ARC regularly, so the permissions don’t get removed.
I think it is just buggy as the notification appears most of the time, sometimes it just randomly doesn’t and I have to force kill the app to get it to appear :frowning:

I’ve also duplicated here: Roon ARC Playback Pauses on Google Pixel 6a [Ticket In].
