I need to use split tunneling on my VPN configuration to allow Roon ARC to bypass my VPN. My Roon Server is a new Windows 11 laptop loaded with RAM and a pretty good CPU. I have verified it is a VPN issue by turning the VPN off and ARC can communicate with my Roon Server, turn VPN back on and it can’t. When I go to the split tunneling configuration page of my VPN and select “Application” it sends me to the Windows file lookup page to input the name of the file for Roon ARC. I just type in Roon ARC (which I didn’t expect it to be the proper name) and Windows doesn’t find that file. I assume it would be a .exe. file for Roon ARC but maybe not. Help!
The VPN‘s option to choose an exe file exists to choose an executable file of an application that is installed on Windows. Exe is is a Windows format for executable files.
However, ARC is an app installed on iOS or Android. The concept of choosing an ARC program file does not make sense in this context, because ARC communicates with the Roon Server over the network, and its executable file format doesn’t matter at all.
Thank you for your response. Yes, I understand Roon ARC is for remote access. For split tunneling, I assume my VPN is asking what is the app that, when it sees it, it knows to let it through the “tunnel” and bypass my VPN. So what do I input as the app the VPN is asking for in the configuration for split tunneling?
You need to do it for all three of Roons components. Roon.exe, RAATServer.exe and Roonserver.exe same as firewall rules.
As @CrystalGipsy says, you probably need to select the Roon exe files that are installed on Windows and that ARC is trying to talk to. The only thing that the VPN sees of ARC is network traffic.
Thank you for your help. There are no .exe files for RAAT loaded with Roon nor Roon.exe. The only .exe file loaded is RoonServer.exe. I did successfully add that to my VPN split tunneling but it still doesn’t allow Roon ARC to get past my VPN. As I said previously, I can turn off my VPN and Roon ARC works. Still a conundrum on what application file (s) I need to identify to my VPN for split tunneling and to allow Roon ARC to work.
Thats is the only one if your only running Roonserver. If you use the remote app on the pc then you also need Roon, and RAATServer if you want local audio. ARC is a mobile app that just connects back to your server there no app that runs locally for it at all. Your VPN is blocking the port its trying to communicate on back to Roon or your firewall is.
Thank you for engaging in this conversation with me. I do understand how Roon and Roon ARC works. My understanding is when you install Roon on as a server on a PC it embeds Roon ARC and RAAT in the load. It isn’t separate software. Either you use it or you don’t. Of course you also have to install the Roon ARC app on your phone or other remote device, but Roon has to have the companion software on the Roon Server to allow the connection to Roon ARC on the remote device. But there is no standalone application file within the core Roon Server software for Roon ARC or RAAT. Hope this makes sense. In any case, I am still not able to get Roon ARC past my VPN by simply selecting RoonServer.exe as the application file to tunnel using my VPN (Bitdefender) split tunneling software. I probably am not identifying the correct tunneling “application” when I input RoonServer.exe. My VPN asks for a website or an application name to set up the split tunneling. Roon is application based, not web based, so I just need to properly identify the application.
It does not embed ARC at all ARC only exists on mobile platforms. You can try and add RoonAppliance as this is part of it all these days if headless.
roonappliance.exe this was added when they split out RoonServer from the remote app.
