Roon ARC app issue on Android - song play status mismatch when app is minimized (ref#XUYRB6)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· Arc on Android issues when minimised. I'm on the latest version of Arc (1.77.404) on an up to date galaxy s24. When I'm playing music on Arc, minimise the app, go and use other apps and then return to Arc, the app seems to start up fresh but the music play back continues. What this means is that the music from before I minimised is still playing (as expected), but Arc now displays that the song is paused or that nothing is playing. If I hit play or start another song, both songs play over each other. The only way for the me to get the original song to stop playing is either let the queue play out or switch off my phone. Fully closing the app does not kill the play back. I've had this happen 3 or 4 times over the last two weeks.

Hi @Joe_0,

Thank you for the report. We’ll escalate this to development.

Just to confirm a few details:

  1. Does this reproduce with any output? Phone speakers, Bluetooth, etc?

  2. Are you opening other apps that rely on the system audio when you have ARC backgrounded (Spotify, YouTube, etc.)?

  3. Does this happen intermittently or every time you background the app and open another one during playback? Can you name any of the tracks that were playing when this last occurred? We’ll use this to pinpoint logs.

Thank you!

Hi @connor , thanks for getting back to me.

The issue has only happened 3 or 4 times, but obviously a very frustrating issue at that, as it leads to needing to restart my phone. I’ve answered your questions below.

I’ve only had the issue occur with Bluetooth headphones, but having said that 99% of my Arc usage is with Bluetooth headphones. Haven’t noticed it using phone speakers, and just spent a couple of minutes trying to recreate it, but couldn’t.

Not that I’m aware of anyways. I normally use Arc when I’m commuting, and during those times I’m either reading news articles, on the NYT Puzzles app, or messaging on Signal. But I don’t recall any voice notes, or media playback happening when this issue occured, but that’s not to say it didn’t.

It’s intermittently, as I said. 3 or 4 times over a couple of weeks. I tried reproducing this morning and I wasn’t able to. I do know for a fact, that it happened on Saturday 2nd May at roughly 10:30am or slightly before it. I was listening to Khatia Buniatishvili - Mozart: Piano Concertos Nos. 20 & 25 - I.Allegro. I backgrounded the app during I.Allegro, and then on maximising again a few minutes later, the app opened as if fresh but the music continued to play in the background. I just let the queue of II.Romance and III.Allegro assai play out. This would have been despite the fact Arc was displaying that nothing at all was playing.

Hi @Joe_0,

Thank you for the update, this is very helpful for our engineering team. Are you able to share the model of BT headphone you’re using with ARC?

Hey @connor , I use Focal Bathys. Hope that helps.

Hi @connor , it’s just after happening this very minute. I wasn’t using any other app. I just backgrounded Arc while listening to Aldous Harding - Coats, and when I returned to the app it was marked as paused despite the music still playing. I’m currently listening to the next song in the queue which is Alice Costelloe - Anywhere Else, but Arc is still displaying Coats by Aldous Harding as if it was paused. If I hit play, both songs play over each other.

Hi @Joe_0,

We’re unfortunately not seeing any traces of Roon Arc diagnostics tied to the S24, but certainly let us know the next time it happens and we’ll check again.

In the meantime, our team will attempt to reproduce the issue in-house, which may take some time. Thanks for your ongoing patience while we take a closer look. :folded_hands:
