Describe the issue

Roon Arc on Android will sometimes unexpectedly exit while playing.

I haven't been able to consistently reproduce the issue, although it does happen somewhat frequently (a few times a day, sometimes multiple times within a few minutes). Otherwise, playback is generally fine. I was able to capture screenshots of the paths of a few songs that failed.

The application doesn't appear to crash (I don't get the standard "This app has crashed, would you like to send a report?" dialog). However, it does stop because when I switch back to the application to splash screen displays same as it would on a clean start.

Roon Arc is running on a vanilla Pixel 7
Roon Server/Appliance are running on Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS via Docker (Hosted on Ubuntu Server). Server has 8GB memory.

Describe your network setup

Roon is running in a Docker container running Ubuntu Server. The Docker host is a 2014 Mac Mini (8GB mem) running Ubuntu Server. There are a couple of other containers running on the host, but not many and it has plenty of free resources.

1Gbps up&down Fiber internet -> wired connection to ISP-supplied router (just used as a passthrough) -> wired connection to primary router (Netgear Nighthawk) -> wired connection to unmanaged switch -> wired connection to Roon server. Roon Arc port forwarding has been configured.

Roon Arc running on Pixel 7. Issue typically seems to happen when on Verizon 4g LTE, although it might happen on Wifi as well (I just don't use Arc as much when I'm home)

Roon library consists of ~17,000 tracks and ~2,000 albums. It is a mix of local files and Tidal.

Hello @zackjs ,

Welcome to the forum and thanks for the report! I’ve activated diagnostics for your account and I’m seeing some interesting errors in the logging. I’ll go ahead and escalate this over to the team and we’ll reach out again once we have more info to share, thank you!

Thanks! I was able to trigger the issue just now (roughly 09:57 Pacific time).

Hey @zackjs,

Thanks for the report! While our team takes a closer look into a fresh Arc diagnostic report, could you test out using our .Apk version of Arc, and see if the same crashes occur?

You can download it here:

https://download.roonlabs.net/builds/RoonARC.apk

I’ll give it a go!

As a separate issue - it would be good to have SSL verification on “downloads.roonlabs.net” proving that it’s owned by Roon. Or, even better, nest it under *.roonlabs.com. There isn’t really any indication that it’s actually owned by Roon aside from a redirect but that could be done just as easily by a malicious user.

The app itself seems legitimate, but I’m always a little paranoid when it comes to downloading apks from the Internet.

I uninstalled the public version of the app and installed the staging version. Disabled wifi to stream over mobile network (I’ve had much stronger success reproducing over mobile data. I’m not entirely sure it happens on wifi).

Issue occurred again at 11:27am Pacific while streaming a tidal track.

I tried streaming a local album (rather than Tidal) over mobile data and haven’t been able to reproduce the issue yet. So it may either be isolated to Tidal streaming or is much more apparent over tidal streaming.

Hi @zackjs ,

Thanks for the additional information, we have added your recent crash to the investigation ticket.

If you are consistently unable to reproduce the issue with local albums, that would be an interesting data point. Let us know if this pattern remains, thanks!

After streaming away from home over the weekend, I’m pretty confident that the crash only occurs for me when streaming through Tidal and does not affect local albums. I’m not 100% sure because I thought that I had seen the issue with local albums in the past, but I have not been able to reproduce it with local albums recently.

Hi @zackjs,
Thanks for letting us know that only Tidal is affected. I will add this information to the ticket. We will let you know when we know more.

Thanks for passing the information along! I’m also happy to download a new beta release once you’ve got one and help test it out.

Thanks! The ticket is still being worked on by our developers but we will be sure to let you know when we have a potential fix for you to test.
