· Roon ARC indicates that port forwarding is working correctly, and I can browse my library and start playing a song. One of two things happens: either the audio doesn't make it to the car, or the track starts to play and stops in about a minute.
We are experiencing this with Android Auto in two completely different vehicles with two different phones. We have current versions of everything.
Tell us about your home network
· TP Link archer 3000; Nucleus plugged into it directly.
Thank you for submitting a report. We have a few clarifying questions that will expedite our investigation.
Do you receive any error messages within ARC when playback stops?
Do you see any connectivity problems listed in ARC Settings, either for the Cloud or Server connection? Make sure you check this when you’re using mobile data/cellular on the phone, not your home WiFi.
Do you have this problem if you play to the phone speakers instead of Android Auto? You mentioned sometimes audio doesn’t make it to the car. Do you mean that ARC indicates playback is proceeding on the phone, but there’s no actual sound in the car speakers?
Lastly, does playback work if you only play Qobuz tracks? ARC doesn’t rely on a connection to your Nucleus when it streams Qobuz; it will stream these tracks directly from the Qobuz API. Testing this allows us to see whether it’s the connection between ARC→Server causing the problem, or an issue within the app.
Thank you for your patience. We understand this is a wall of text above, but the more detail you can provide, the better equipped we’ll be to pin down the problem.
Thanks for the additional info - so the issue only occurs when attempting to play audio via AA. What is the make and model of the car and headset using AA?
Could you please reproduce the issue, and share a more specific date and time, as well as the name of track attempted to play?
Do you have any similar issues using the Qobuz mobile app directly, under the same circumstances?
Thank you for the additional details — that helps clarify the scope of the issue.
Based on what you’ve described, this behavior does not appear to be specific to Roon ARC:
The issue only occurs when using Android Auto
Playback works correctly when playing directly to the phone
The same behavior occurs when using the Qobuz mobile app under identical conditions
ARC shows playback progressing, but audio is muted or stops after a short time
Given that multiple apps exhibit the same symptoms across two different vehicles (Audi Q5 and Ford Mustang Mach-E), this strongly suggests a limitation or instability in the Android Auto audio implementation for these vehicle systems, rather than an issue within Roon or ARC itself.
That said, we can certainly report this behavior to our R&D team for awareness and tracking. However, since the same behavior is observed in third-party apps, any resolution would most likely need to come from Android Auto or the vehicle manufacturers, rather than from changes within Roon.
For now, we recommend:
Ensuring Android Auto and the vehicle infotainment firmware are fully up to date
Testing with wired vs wireless Android Auto, if applicable
As a workaround, playing directly to the phone when possible
Under the same network conditions (same cellular connection, same location), do tracks play normally in ARC when Android Auto is not in use?
We appreciate you taking the time to test and report back. We’ll flag this internally, but wanted to be transparent about the likely root cause and expectations going forward.
Please keep in mind that this thread will eventually auto-close without any further responses from the user who submitted the report. If that happens, please simply create a new support requestand the team will promptly merge threads or re-open topic threads accordingly.
To take action on this report, we need to confirm whether you see similar behavior when using other apps in the same two vehicles. Please see @vadim’s post above for the full details. Thank you!
Android ‘recently’ added ‘driving mode’, which is supposed to block distracting notifications. it blocks Roon ARC from playing music, apparently without telling you that your are blocked. It blocks you even if I add the app to the list of exempt apps. It is quite hard to understand how it makes sense for ‘Driving mode’ to disable music, but there it is. Perhaps you need a manifest element to fix this.
Before we can take this further, we still need some of the specific details we asked for earlier, as “Driving mode” behavior differs depending on how it’s implemented (Android Auto itself vs Digital Wellbeing / Google Assistant driving mode).
Could you please clarify:
Which Driving mode is active when this happens (Android Auto, Digital Wellbeing, or Assistant-based)?
The phone model(s) and Android version(s) involved
Whether Android Auto is wired or wireless
The exact steps to reproduce the issue
A timestamp and track name from a failed playback attempt
Once we have this information, we can pass the full context to R&D and verify whether ARC may be incorrectly classified by the system (for example as a background or “distracting” app), and whether any application-level changes are required.
Without the above details, it’s not possible for us to confirm or act on the root cause you’re describing.
Thanks for your cooperation — we’ll be happy to review this once the requested information is available.
