Describe the issue

I was wondering that Roon ARC uses a lot of mobile data (>3GB in the past 4 weeks) despite I am mostly (>95% of the time) listening to music I downloaded on my phone. Today I realised that playback stutters and stops if my phone's connection gets wonky - again, while listening to downloaded music. Note that I do not put ARC into offline mode.

Sidenote: Roon ARC also still uses around 30% battery on my phone in any given period of time and does produce a lot of heat, despite answers in other threads saying that these issues should be fixed by now.

Describe your network setup

Network setup is irrelevant. Issue is mobile phone only.

Hey @that_fluke,

Thanks for writing in and sharing your report!

ARC maintains communication with upstream services even during downloaded playback, which can result in some mobile data usage. This background activity may include metadata retrieval, license validation, or connectivity checks.

To minimize data consumption, you can adjust the following settings:

  • Download Quality: Navigate to ARC settings and select “Bandwidth Optimized” to reduce data usage when downloading tracks.
  • Wi-Fi-Only Downloads: Ensure downloads occur exclusively over Wi-Fi to prevent unintended mobile data usage.
  • Offline Mode: Enabling Offline Mode will prevent ARC from accessing online services, significantly reducing background data activity.

These adjustments should help optimize ARC’s data usage while maintaining a seamless listening experience.

Next time this happens, take note of the date, time, and name of track playing. Does this happen over both wifi as well as mobile data?

Thank you!
