Sorry, the answer to “how can we help” should have been “freezes or crashes” and to “other options” should have been “my roon software won’t start up.”
(I realize those replies don’t make sense given the two questions, but they were the best choices I could make from the options provided).
The brief issue definition is in the subject line.
More specifically, when I try to run ARC on Android, after getting my login info, it freezes showing the ARC logo.
Previous reports of this on the community forum were answered with “install the .APK file”.
I configured the device permissions for this and dowloaded the APK file. When I execute the file the error message is (roughly) “can’t be installed on this device.”
The device is a brand new Pixel 9 fully up to date with very little 3rd part software installed and no other issues.
Just to confirm — the installation itself went smoothly, but when you open the app it gets stuck on the logo screen, correct?
To help us investigate further, please connect your PC to your Android phone and follow the steps below to collect logs:
Install ADB (instructions for all platforms are here).
Your URL isn’t properly embedded forcing me to cut and paste it.
The jump to the ADB installation instructions is not properly integrated into your instructions. Please extract from the ADB instructions site the relevant instructions and correctly integrate them into your instructions (i.e. don’t say to open a command prompt when the ADB instructions already did that.)
Thanks for uploading the ADB logs to our file uploader.
In order to create an internal ticket for investigation could you please confirm with us what was exactly the state of Roon ARC when you try to open it or install from APK ?
I uploaded a video “ARC doing nothing” showing what happens when I tap the Roon ARC icon on my Pixel 9. I let it run for 30 seconds. I assume that is long enough to document the issue.
I also uploaded “Roon APK Fail” which starts with tapping Files, then I tap the download folder showing a copy of the APK file, tap on the “more options” icon for that file, tap “install” which then displays “you can’t installl the app on your device.”
Thank you @Alan_Watkins for sharing all of the above!
We were able to take a closer look at the logs you’ve sent over, and saw Arc is trying to use APIs (likely location, notifications, or media attribution) that are being denied in certain operations, which can cause plugins to fail initialization.
Can you double-check permissions on your device – ensure Arc has Storage, Location, Network, and Notifications allowed in Android settings.
We’ll be discussing things in more depth with our development team in the meantime, and should have more information to share soon. Thank you!
We’ve discussed this with our senior QA and development teams. The team is investigating some possibilities here and, as soon as that investigation is complete, we’ll be sure to follow up ASAP.
You have our apologies for the trouble here, and we’ve greatly appreciated your patience as we continue investigating this tricky issue. We’ll be in touch as soon as we can.
Thank you again for your ongoing patience. We’ll report here as soon as the investigation bears fruit and we have a clear next step. We know it’s incredibly frustrating when a bug interrupts your everyday use of the app and we’re urgently seeking out a resolution pathway.
Also, I still cannot get the APK file to install. I set all the permissions for install unknown app but it still refuses saying “you can’t install the app on your device.” How do I fix this?
We are checking with the ARC team to see if there’s been any updates on this that they can share. As for the APK, have you tried to completely delete the ARC app before reinstalling it from APK? Is there any change if you delete + reboot the Pixel and then try to reinstall from APK?
No removing the app and and attempting to install the apk results in the same, it starts to install then says at the bottom of the screen in a white band “You can’t install the app on your device.”
BTW I’m just curious: how is it that a major app like Roon Arc doesn’t work when installed from the store and the fall back is to install via an APK? Is it hard to make an Android store app that just works? And then of course, how is it that on a common phone like my two pixels, even that doesn’t work? Is this normal in the Android world?
