Sorry, I’m gonna go ahead and add more detail myself in the ticket.

This is similar to:

Roon ARC just won’t launch, period, on the Android OS on the Sony Walkman NW-WM1AM2. It seems Support created a ticket in the backend to look into this in response to the previous post but without any updates.

Not being able to use ARC on my main music player is a real downer, and I think for a premium music-focused service like Roon, supporting a common DAP like the Sony Walkman should be worth the effort. I would like to know if Roon is still going to address this issue, or if those of us trying to get ARC to work on the Sony Walkman devices should assume No.

Thanks.

I have the same issue most of the time on my WM1ZM2. Roon Remote only loads about 1 out of 5-10 times. But I have gotten it working, like right now. However, I used the button on the DAP to change volume and Roon crashed immediately. This time, I was able to get it open again. It feels like a non-visible time out type issue for me. Other times it would just crash from the Roon logo screen repeatedly. When I was feeling patient enough, I would clear the Roon cache and storage in the Android settings and then it often opened, but not always (this is bad because you lose any custom settings like dark mode for example). It’s a very frustrating situation.

I have never gotten Roon ARC to open on the Sony. There’s another thread here on the same topic from last year, but it’s closed.

Hello @sherifs,

Thanks for reaching out to Support.

We’re sorry to see that your Walkman device is not performing sustainably. The ticket addressing your problem is still with our developers, but since this device no longer receives updates from Sony’s side, it may take longer to resolve.

Thanks for your understanding.

Hi @alex_h

Thank you very much for following up.

I really hope Roon can find a way to update ARC to work on the device. While I understand that the Walkman may not be receiving OS updates from Sony, all the other Google Play Apps I use to listen to music or access my local library do get regular updates that fix bugs and add features.

I get that ARC is doing more advanced things with the signal chain and audio processing than say Symfonium or Plexamp, but it has the price tag to match, so the expectations are also a little different.

Is it possible to get an estimate on when (in vague terms, months, quarters) we might see a fix?

Thank you.

@sherifs ,

Thanks for reaching us back.

Unfortunately, we do not have an estimate on this because this has been queued to developers and we can’t provide any updates or estimates earlier than we hear from them back.

Thanks for your understanding.

· Force quit issue on both Roon and Roon ARC app

I am currently using Sony walkman NW-WM1ZM2, with android 11 and firmware version 1.09.00. I encountered the situation where both Roon and Roon ARC app force quit within 2s while opening them on my device. I think Roon and Sony walkman would be a perfect match if they work well.

Hope your team may help to figure out what the problem is.

Hi @hlc.kelvinstyle,

Thank you for your post. We’ll merge your post into the main tracking thread for the affected DAPs so you can receive updates as we post them.

The team has to fix compatibility issues with DAPs on a case-by-case basis due to the specificity of the custom Android integration layers involved. We work hard to prioritize the most urgently requested devices and will ensure that this case receives attention. That said, we can’t promise that we’ll be able to resolve this particular symptom in the near future. Please stay tuned and thank you for your patience in the meantime.

Hi @hlc.kelvinstyle,

We wanted to check in on this report.

Can you please elaborate on your statement below? By “force quit,” do you mean the apps crash, or do they freeze (forcing you to force close them)?

I encountered the situation where both Roon and Roon ARC app force quit within 2s while opening them on my device.

We’re curious if this happens every time you open either app, or if it only occurs when both apps are open.

Please share a screenshot of what you see in Roon (not ARC) before this happens. Thank you!

I’m not the original poster, but for me, the apps crash after trying to open for a few seconds. They never get as far as opening. I get the splash title screen but then it immediately crashes after 3-4 seconds. It happens with both Roon and ARC.

Hello @Victoria_Carlin / @hlc.kelvinstyle ,

Can you please check your Notification settings? We are investigating a similar issue, and I suspect the cause may be the same:

I’m not one of the users tagged but I’ve been having the same issue on the Sony Walkman. Unfortunately I don’t think that’s it. I had never denied Roon ARC notifications (it never got to the stage of asking because it always crashed). I opened App Info for Roon ARC and went into Notifications and they are turned on for me.

This is version 1.79.413 on Android 11 in my case. I’m very happy to do more testing and provide more information if it helps.

Agree with @sherifs I just updated to 2.70 for Roon, and checked the permissions and notifications. Interestingly, the permissions area in the settings for Roon are greyed out, you can’t actually choose it. But the notifications settings (separate item) has everything turned on. For ARC, same situation except weirdly the permissions section is active but it only shows allow media files on device or something similar. So both are continuing to refuse to open at all. Title screen appears, crash, back to Home Screen. I’ve tried various Force Stops, uninstalling, reinstalling in the past but nothing changes.

Hello @sherifs and @Victoria_Carlin,

Thank you for your detailed follow-ups and for testing the notification workaround.

Based on the behavior you are describing, it is highly likely that the crashes you are experiencing on the Sony Walkman DAPs are tied to a broader issue currently affecting our Android application. Our development team is actively working on a fix for this general Android instability, which you can track here: Android app crashes and stutters after updating to version 2.70.

We are optimistic that the upcoming release from our R&D team will resolve the force-quit issues on your devices as well.

However, if the issue persists on these specific Walkman models after the general Android fix is deployed, we will proceed as Connor mentioned earlier. Because fixing DAP-specific compatibility issues requires navigating custom Android integration layers, we will need to prioritize further development for these specific Sony devices based on the volume of user requests.

We appreciate your continued patience while we get this broader Android fix rolled out. Please keep an eye out for the upcoming update, and let us know if it improves the situation on your Walkmans.

Thanks Vadim, we’ll see what happens with the eventual fix I guess.

Thank you for the follow up. Fingers crossed very tightly indeed that your suspicion is correct! It would be amazing to have ARC work on our Walkman DAPs. I’ll keep an eye out for that release.

Hi All,

We’ve recently released a potential fix (and hot fix) to our latest Early Access version of Roon, if anyone is interested giving a try:

We should have these same fix’s included in the next full Production update as well, if you’d rather wait.

Thank you! :raising_hands:

I installed the update on my WM1ZM2 (2.71, 1675) and after it still crashed on opening. But then I cleared the app cache and tried again and it worked. It’s a little jittery. I started a song then quickly touched the screen to do something and the app crashed. But I was able to get back in without an issue and it’s working now. I haven’t looked at ARC on the DAP yet.
