Roon Core v2.0 (build 1277) running on an Apple (M1 2020) MacMini w/ 8GB RAM, Mac OS 12.6.7. Playing audio via a NAD M10. I constantly receive the error “Roon audio file is loading slowly. This may indicate a performance or hardware problem.”. I use an iPhone 14 Pro Max w/ all of the current updates. All network connectivity is via WiFi. Where do I start troubleshooting this problem? It seems like there should be an easy solution.
The place to start is right there to the left of the question
Roon recommends a wired Core for a reason. Try a temporary ethernet cable from router to Core and from router to NAD and see if it changes things. If yes, leave Core wired and try if you can get away with the NAD on wifi.
Wifi is problematic with concurrent real-time traffic because it can’t send and receive at the same time, all clients share the available bandwidth, and if connectivity is not great there are frequent errors that lead to resending of data. You have wifi traffic from router to Core and from Core to NAD at the same time, but it’s an audio data stream that doesn’t have much leeway for networks packets being delayed.
Switched the Mac Mini to ethernet – problem persists. Turned off WiFi on Mac Mini (ethernet only) – problem persists. Switched M10 to ethernet – so far / so good.
Today I just downloaded DSF files from PSAudio. First, the nightmare to find my files with Roon. For some reason it proposed the WAV files instead the DSF files (with the same names).
Once I succeeded, this problem: it works for DSD64 but this message (Roon audio file is loading slowly…etc.) for the DSD256.
Now:
- my DAC is DSD native
- my Windows Computer is the ultimate beast (the last Intel I9 CPU with 64 DDRAM5 @ 5600 MHz, M2 SSD last generation PCIExpress4)
- my Roon core is on my NAS QNAP that has native APP on it by default and is on M2 SSD! There are my audio files
- the Roon DB is on a separate SSD on NAS
- from the computer to the NAS I have Ethernet Wired and tested at 2.5 Gb/s ! (so no the normal 1 Gb/s)
…And this message I think is a shame for no matter audiophile or not together with the search for the files.
I had Roon for some time, I canceled, came back and I will cancel again.
In ASIO Mode I can play the same files with all other APPS: the free MusicBee, Jriver, Audirvana, etc.
We are in 2023 and Roon cannot make this work! Not saying that you cannot minimize to tray the application.
One is to be an audiophile that has to debug or endure all of these, another is about basic things!
Sorry!
@Cristian_Gergely If you want support for that, please open a new topic in #support. Your problem most likely has totally different causes than the one here, although the symptoms are the same.
If you don’t want support and just vent, #feedback is the right place
Good. Probably means that the wifi to the Mini happened to be strong enough for its Core duties but the wifi to the M10 wasn’t. The complexities of wifi
I hope that you still enjoy
With a PC of that spec , it will “eat Roon” , why not put the core on the PC where it will perform with no trouble and just use the NAS as a Source
Better still use the PC as a the Core , depending on your library size install a 4TB SATA drive in the PC and use the NAS as a purely backup . a 4TB internal drive will be cheap. Even a n external USB drive will perform better than the NAS set up currently
Just a thought. Easy to try by putting a few files on the PC drive as a test
