Roon Bridge with Meridian 818 over ethernet

@support

Quick question: I have Roon Rock running on one machine and Roon Bridge on another. I want to connect to a Meridian 818v3 via the Roon Bridge over ethernet, but only the ROCK machine can see the 818 (along with the RoonBridge), despite all devices being on the same network.

Should this work or does Roon Bridge only support USB type connections, not Sooloos?

Thanks for reaching out to us with your question, @JeremyAH!

RoonBridge allows your Core machine to play to a device that is connected to the RoonBridge device over the network. For networked devices like the Meridian 818 there is no need to use RoonBridge to connect. Since the 818 is a networked endpoint you can connect directly from the Core machine to the endpoint.

Thanks!

Thanks, Dylan.

For SQ reasons, I wanted to split the renderer from the music server (in the same way Antipodes do with their CX and EX products). Do I take it this isn’tt possible and you have to connect directly from the Core?

Hey @JeremyAH,

Rather than connecting the 818 directly to the Core machine you can connect the 818 to your network and play to it as a networked endpoint.

I know, I understood what you were saying, however I discovered you can get a gain in sound quality by making changes which includes using an extremely low noise network card in the renderer and another increase by using a low power-consumption CPU. The best way to get the best of both worlds (for example upsampling and SQ) is to split the renderer from the music server.

From what you’re saying I can’t do this?

Hey @JeremyAH,

RoonBridge uses RAATServer which connects with local audio devices that are reported by the OS. Meridian devices don’t communicate with RAATServer — It communicates with the network directly via the Sooloos protocol. In order for the 818 to be usable in Roon it needs to be seen on the network.

What type of device are you running RoonBridge on?

Hi Dylan

Thanks for clarifying this.

It’s a 4 core Atom with a JCAT Net card for the renderer, although I have an Antipodes EX arriving on Thursday to potentially replace this. The original plan was to use an Antipodes CX (in combination with the EX) to run the Roon Server.

After trying to make a similar setup work over the weekend, I’d kind of guessed RoonBridge didn’t work with Sooloos and it might make more sense to change the Antipodes EX for a CX.

Thanks for clearing that up.

Jeremy
