Description of Issue

Roon does not recognize either Schiit Dac. I had the Schiit Modi Multi-Bit set up in my living room. I had a work issue that caused me to rename my wireless network. No othere changes were made to the network. After I did my system would not see the Schiit Modi Multibit connected to my USBridge. I tried different USB cables, and then tried changing the OS on the USBridge form DietPi, to VitOS, then finally to RoPieee. No mater the OS, roon only saw the USBridge, but not the dac. I ordred a Modi 3+, same issue. I tired several other dacs, ODAC-RevB, Adioquest Cobalt Blue, and the Revolution Dac, and all are immediately recognized when I plug them in to the USBridge in my living room or the Raspberry Pi in my bedroom. Neither Schiit Dac is recognized. I prefer the sound of the Schiit Modi Multibit when compared to any other Dac I have tried or owned. I would really like to be able to use it.

There have been earlier reports of issues between Ropieee and Schiit DACs as well as possible fixes. In particular, the one below also involves an issue with WiFi (and a Ropieee bug). You might want to try the fix discussed there.

I didn’t see this answered apologize if you answered and I missed it.

Your USBridge Sig, does it have the SPDIF board? That’s the only way Roon would “roon only saw the USBridge, but not the dac”

Roon bridge doesn’t report available endpoint unless it sees the DAC. USB negotiates so, until the endpoint sees the DAC, it won’t show-up in Roon. However, SPDIF has no negotiation so it’s just bits out. For that reason, as soon as Roon bridge sees a SPDIF interface it will report as available in Roon.

What I think is happening…
RoPieee and DietPi are configured to use SPDIF instead of USB. I don’t know the exact DietPi config but in RoPieee to use USB you’d want to:

  • Set Audio HAT as No HAT Configured
  • Audio USB toggle to on

Then, and this order is important…

  1. Turn off the DAC
  2. Plug the USB into the Pi
  3. Turn on the DAC
  4. When the lights on the DAC stop dancing make sure it is on USB*
  5. Reboot the Pi
  6. Enable the DAC in Roon Settings → Audio

That should get you going.

*If the Modi MB boots without USB it disables that interface.

Hey @Gregory_Jazwinski,

We just wanted to check in with you to see if @ipeverywhere’s recommendation helped you resolve this issue. Please send us an update when you have a chance! Thanks!
