Describe the issue
My Roon client (running on iPhone) doesnt always connect to my Roon Server (running on QNAP NAS) via my Orbi mesh network. My server is tied to a satellite and the issue manifests when I move downstairs to where the router is, which also has my Holo Red player wired to it. I understand that moving the Server downstairs would solve the problem, but I want to avoid this if I can...... I had the same issue with my previous Linksys Velop mesh
Line-of-sight can always be an issue between mesh nodes because Roon’s uncompressed protocols will usually expose WiFi interference that can otherwise linger unnoticed. If you experienced this with a previous mesh setup, it might be worth inspecting the physical layer by rearranging the nodes themselves to avoid interference sources (appliances, metal in walls, etc.).
If possible, hardwire RoonServer via ethernet, at least for troubleshooting.
It’s important with an Orbi mesh network to uncheck “disable IGMP Proxying” in the Advanced tab (or similarly named) for your model’s settings admin page. Similarly make sure that IGMP Snooping and any Multicast forwarding settings are enabled.
Orbi routers will otherwise restrict multicast traffic between mesh nodes, which can limit Roon’s device discovery.
Thank you, Connor for the detailed response. I have already tried disabling IMGP as suggested and this made no difference. Also the links between nodes is excellent - I am achieveing >500Mbps. Elaborating on the problem, I think this is related to moving between rooms. When I keep an iPad or iPhone in the main listening room everything works fine. The problem appears when I move from my office upstairs (where the servers are) to the listening area downstairs (where the Holo Red et al are).
Hi Michael if you have more than a single network at home as you move through your home your phone will drop one for the other in favor of a stronger signal.
Set your phone to forget all save for a single WIFI 5GHz access point and deactivate IPv6 on your router per Roon best practice recommendations. This and as @connor mentioned moving your server to an Ethernet connection will provide you with a world of stability and performance.
Hi there. Thanks for checking. I moved the server downstairs and Ethernet connected it to the main Orbi router and now all works fine. Long and short, connecting to a Orbi satellite is problematic. I am finding exactly the same issue with HQplayer connecting to a NAA client. Many thanks again.
