Description of Issue

I’ve had my Roon Core up until recently running on my home server/nas, Roon Core has always been bit laggy on that with background analysis enabled so I lived without whatever the analysis brings. Roon Core was stable on that system and it’s never crashed.
This week I decided to stick Roon Core on a Core i7 laptop that no longer gets any laptop use, not a recent i7 but faster than my server (i7-3537U ~3GHz) and it’d be dedicated to Roon Core rather than sharing resources on the server. It accesses the music library shared from the server via NFS over 1Gbps ethernet. The main “control surface” tends to be Roon Remote running on the Galaxy Tab S7+.

Initially I set up the new Core running on Fedora 34 in multi-user mode (aka no desktop) as it was already installed on the laptop and whilst Roon benefitted from having a faster core I found that the Core is regularly crashing when background analysis is running.
Initially this was accessing the server over AC WiFi and whilst I found no evidence of network connectivity issues to eliminate possible WiFi problems I cabled it up to a 1Gb ethernet switch but it’s made no difference.
After a bit of searching found a comment on the forums suggesting that Roon Core might not play nice when network interfaces are managed with NetworkManager. Rather than spend time changing up the network management on Fedora I swapped in a different SSD and did a fresh install of Ubuntu Server 20.04 LTS + Roon Core + dependencies just like my file server. Guess what, same crashing.

There’s been just a few reports of skipped file imports in Roon’s GUI, mainly TIFF image files but if the crashing was due to the odd corrupt/unreadable file it wouldn’t be crashing this often…

When looking at the timestamps of the dump files it seems to be consistently crashing every ~76 minutes so looks like the cause may be something more programmatic.

Currently I have background analysis set to “Fast (2 cores)”.
It’s now been analysing for a couple of days on the Ubuntu install now, in terms of hardware the CPU temp is stable at ~70C under load and ~40C when not.
Network connectivity is a stable 1Gbps, no system/filesystem/read issues logged by the file server and the Core’s network read rates are between 50 to 400 Mbps during analysis (which is still running).
I’ve tried to eliminate any potential networking issues by logging into a shell on the Core systsem then from there logging into a shell on the file server and running htop.
I’ve been playing tunes on Roon when the Roon Core crashes and whilst Roon’s GUI will drop to the pulsing graphic I can see htop running on the server from a shell on the core happily updating so no network problems between the two.

A typical crash shows up in the system journal like this…

Any suggestions?

Cheers

Looks like this needs a bounce

So after disabling the background analysis I’ve found that it still segfaults every 76 minutes.
So title should actually just be “Roon Core segfaulting every 76 minutes”, the only real difference between this crashing instance and my other, existing, stable instance is that this instance is accessing files via NFS.

No-one?

Another Ubuntu Server core user here. Did you try to use SMB instead of NFS to mount the music folder? Reason I’m asking is that 1) NFS is kind of obsolete and not that well supported in general; 2) I seem to vaguely recall some pathname conversion issues with NFS, and looking at your stack trace what seems to be breaking is a Unicode conversion, which hints at something around pathname conversion. Just my $.02.

Thanks for the suggestion @Fernando_Pereira but I’m a system admin by trade, I design and administer large platforms with hundreds of Linux and Unix systems, NFS isn’t obsolete at all.
I don’t use SMB because I have no need to, NFS is easy to squash client users to avoid ownership/access issues and its a more efficient network filesystem protocol than CIFS/SMB and Windows isnt in the chain here at all so Samba/CIFS isn’t required.

In this situation I have a Linux system (running Roon Server/Core) mounting an NFS export on another Linux system (the file server). As far as the running Core on the NFS client is concerned the files are at a local path.

The stand out thing here is that it’s a fresh install of Ubuntu Server + Roon Server yet this segfault is occuring every 76 minutes which seems like a null pointer is occurring in Roon Core after a certain period, 76 minutes? 4600 seconds? Hoping this might ring a bell with Roon support.

Hi Vin,

We currently have a ticket open about the issue I believe you’re running into here. There are cases where network activity can lead to a resource leak which causes Roon to then crash. I don’t have any specific timelines I can provide just yet, but there are some workarounds discussed in this thread that might help in the meantime.

As sometime admin and long-time user of NFS from its beginning until I could happily free myself from the chore, I beg to differ  Anyway, the reason I suggested CIFS was as a short-term fix for your predicament. It works well with Roon even if both sides are running Linux, in my experience. And I recall trying to use NFS between my core and music storage server first time I got Roon several years ago, and getting buggy behavior with non-ASCII file names. It could have been the Linux versions I had then, or something else, but I quickly gave up and moved to CIFS, mostly without issues since.

Incidentally, the link that @dylan shared seems to point to NetworkManager-associated weirdness that sometimes triggers bugs (lack of proper error handling?) in various other services. For me it did not hurt RoonServer, but it messed up Cockpit software updates. I ended up tweaking my network configurations following various discussions online, but unfortunately I forgot to add the details to my sysadmin notes :grimacing:

Thanks @dylan , being Ubuntu Server it doesn’t use the NetworkManager daemon (stated this in the first post) and I have the network configured with a manual/static ip which is also reserved on my router.

This isn’t an urgent problem for me, I’ve left it and gone back to running the roon core on my server for now (which serves the files) but I thought Roon support should be aware as a segfault is usually caused by a unhandled issue in the software.

So this ended up being caused by a really short 2 minute DHCP lease time on my network.
Something about dhclient on Linux with such a short lease time was causing Roon Server to crash.

My problem is solved but this highlights a potential bug in Roon Server and Roon Bridge as they shouldn’t crash.

Hope that helps.
