Roon Core what is best

Hello all.

What is best you used for core, I have about 7000 albums.

Options:

  • NUC fan less Roon ROCK NUC 13i3 1315U CPU 16GB RAM
  • Nucleus one.

I don’t use a streamer, just USB from the core to the DAC.

The NUC will be a more future proof solution.

The processor in the NUC is more powerful in single thread perfromance terms and has more cores.

There is only 4GByte of memory (I believe) in the Nucleus One as sold (although it can be upgraded at extra cost).

The memory in the Nucleus One is single channel (only one memory slot) whereas the memory in the NUC is dual channel so, provided both RAM slots are utilised (2 x 8GByte modules rather than 1 x 16GByte module), the NUC’s memory accesses will be faster than those of the Nucleus One.

From a user experience point of view, running RoonOS (as installed by ROCK) on the NUC will be identical to that of the Nucleus One once the initial install has been completed.

In addition, if you want to, you can transplant your NUC board into a truly fanless case for a completely silent experience although, unless truly stressed by background analysis or heavy DSP on DSD, neither the Nucleus One nor the NUC in the standard case will run the fans during normal operation and, if the Roon Server is not in the listening room, a truly silent operation may not be important. For a NUC13, two such cases from Akasa are the Newton WS and the Plato WS.

The plus point for the Nucleus One is aethetics. If your Roon server is going to be visible, then it may be that the appearance of the Nucleus One appeals more than that of a NUC.

This is the one I would use. The One has less memory, less memory slots and uses a Celeron processor.
