"Roon could not find WGL functions required to initialize OpenGL"

Started receiving this error message recently, which seems likely related to an AMD Radeon driver update (or possibly a Windows 11 update). Tried uninstalling Roon, using AMD’s clean removal and reinstall tools, and reinstalling Roon, but no luck. Nothing else is malfunctioning and I don’t want to use outdated video drivers just because of Roon. Any ideas?

Have you checked that your graphics hardware drivers are up to date? See:

Yes, that’s the problem. One of the recent graphics driver updates seems to have broken Roon.

Good day @Thomas_Polseno !

Please be informed that for Roon Open GL 3.0 or above is required.

Can you please use the instruction as per here:

and confirm the Open GL version on your machine ?

We’d also recommend you to download latest GPU driver, install it on your machine and reboot.

Have a nice day!

Regards.

There’s definitely something wrong with the OpenGL installation with the latest AMD software–OpenGL seems to be missing entirely. I installed the Windows OpenGL Compatibility Pack and Roon opens but is too broken to use. Lots of weird graphics glitches. I’ll try another fresh AMD graphics driver install when the next version is released.

Good day @Thomas_Polseno,

Thank you for the detailed update .

Based on what you’re seeing, this does indeed look like an issue with the OpenGL components in the latest AMD driver package, rather than with Roon itself. If OpenGL is missing or only partially functional at the driver level, Roon will not be able to initialize the UI correctly, which also explains the graphical artifacts after installing the Windows OpenGL Compatibility Pack.

Your plan to retry with a future AMD driver release is reasonable, as this should ultimately be addressed by the GPU vendor. Unfortunately, the Compatibility Pack is not a supported long-term solution for Roon and can lead to the behavior you described.

For now, the only stable workaround is to use a driver version where full OpenGL support is present. If you notice the issue persists with an updated AMD release, please let us know - we’d be happy to take another look.

Thank you for your patience,

Regards.

Hi @Thomas_Polseno,

AMD hasn’t officially posted anything, but there are broad user reports of Adrenalin Edition 25.11.1 in particular causing problems with OpenGL-based applications, if that’s the release you’re referring to here.

Have you tried downgrading to a previous release?

I’m not surprised to hear this. I haven’t tried downgrading yet but most likely the last WHQL version 25.9.1 would work. Perhaps once they’ve received enough service tickets they’ll fix the current version.

Hello @Thomas_Polseno ,

Yes, it is possible that it is an issue with the latest driver. Yes, you can try the previous driver and see how that works out, let us know!
