Roon Core on 2 devices: iMac (app) and Innuos SE (embedded), one license
Tidal subscription
Problem
Roon on iMac (Applications folder) will not boot up. Everything works fine on Innuos SE Core. Everything was working fine on the iMac which was actually used for quite sometime before recently adding the second Core
Contributing Factors?
iMac’s external iMac hard drive crashed. This contained RoonBackups and Music Library
After fixing external hard drive issue, Roon initially booted up, but only recognized the SE Core, not the iMac Core. I Attempted to restore a backup, but in the middle in crashed. I have been unsuccessfully working to resolve for two days.
Seems like Ione path would be to download the app again from the Roon website. Can I “masquerade” as a New User somehow and try to restore from an existing backup? And avoid not paying for a new subscription?
Thanks for contacting support, I’d be happy to take a look over this issue with you.
The way that Roon works is that you can have one active Core at a time per license, so if you have the Innuous active then you can’t have the iMac core active as well. You can, however, use the iMac as a Roon Remote and control the Innuous Core and play back to iMac local zones as a remote.
It seems to me that when the iMac hard drive crashed that the Roon database backup has also been affected, causing you to not be able to restore from said backup. My question to you is, do you have the same library on the Innuous as you had on the iMac? Is it possible to create a new backup from your Innous and restore the iMac that way? Do you have another backup of your iMac database saved anywhere else?
Keep in mind that even if you are able to restore on the iMac, since you only have one subscription this action will cause the Innous to lost it’s Core status and for the iMac to become the Core. I would also advise reinstalling the Roon app on the iMac just in case Roon itself has been affected with the hard drive crash.
Please let me know if you have any other questions.
I totally understand only one Core can be operative at a time, and have not expected anything other than that.
As far as I can tell, Roon automatically creates different backups for each of the Cores. Backups are clearly identifiied in the backup file as to which Core they are aligned. So yes, I have different backups that could be used, but that creates different issues. See PS below.
How do I go about reinstalling the Roon app? It does not seem to be available on the Apple Apple Store when viewed thru my iMac…
Thanks again for the help.
PS. Separately, I have found that if I restore a back up onto a different Core than it was created on, it reassigns every track and album with new Created and Modified Dates. This is a big problem because it changes how albums/tracks are ordered when choosing the Most Recent view. This has happend to me each time in the past and because I choose to look at all my files from Most Recently Added to Least Recent, its a “painful” experience. I’ve gone in to Library/Import settings and tried every one of the alternative methods of reading the import dates, and none of them re-adjust the files back to the original date created for Roon.
If you have advice about how to remedy this, It also would be much appreciated.
Thank you, Noris

As for the issue you have with new Created and Modified dates, I would make sure that you follow our guide regarding the Migration process (https://kb.roonlabs.com/Migration) and see if it works then. The date added should be saved inside the database, so if you have different import dates on the iMac database vs the Innous database you may want to try restoring the original iMac backup after reinstalling Roon. I would also take a look at this article that explains why you could be losing your import dates.
