Roon crashes on Mac Mini M2 running Sonoma 14.6 (ref#G6C82W)

Describe the issue

Hardware: Mac Mini M2, 16GB, 500GB HDD, Sonoma 14.6.
Network: all 2,5Gbit Switches, from TP-Link. LAN-Connection. Different Airplay-Speakers.
I started with a Roon Optimized Core on a NUC mashine, but the Roon always crashed and I needed to restart Ron manually. I thought it was because of the cheap Mini-PC I used to run Roon, therefore purchased a new Mac Mini M2 a few days ago. But the issue is again the same. The Mac crashes anbd restarts for no reason. I am running only Roon on this Mac. No Virus-Scan, no Firewall, no other tool.
I am totally disappointed, because I reallly love the Roon concept and functionallity, but I can not use it as it always crashes. I have bought the lifetime subscription and would be happy if you could help me set the system up so it runs without crashing all the time.
If you need more info, please let me know.

Manuel

Describe your network setup

I am running a home-network with several switches and devices on the Network. I am using TP-Link TL-SG108-M2 2,5 Gbit Switches and AVM FritzBox 7690 Router and 2x AVM Fritzreapter 6000 for WLAN Mesh. No other issues with my Network with other devices or Apps.

Hello @Manuel_Winter ,

Thanks for reaching out with your report. When you experience the crash is it on any specific page or tab each time? Are there any crash logs generated? Does both Roon + RoonServer crash or just one and not the other (is RoonServer still running in the task bar)?

I tried to enable diagnostics for your account but it doesn’t look like logs are coming in, can you please note the time + date of the next crash and then manually upload your Roon + RoonServer logs to the below link?

Hi Noris,
thank you for your message. I can’t really tell, what exactly is happening, because I just realize that the Mac restarts several times a day.
If you tell me how to collect the logs, I will upload them.

Hi @Manuel_Winter,

You can follow these instructions to find the RoonServer folder and the Logs folder contained therein:

Thank you for your patience. Please let us know if we can clarify further.

Hi Connor,

I have just uploaded all log-files.

If you need more info, let me konow.

Run a app like Amphetamin to prevent power saving settings in MacOS.
Join the beta tester program and install MacOS15

I’ve been running my roon server for a long time now on my M1 MacBook

Hi Marc,
thanks for the recommendations. I have set my Mac to shutdown at 0:00 and restart at 7:15 and as far as I know all other power saving options are turned off.
I will check that.

Why would it be an advantage to run MacOS 15?

I have the EXACT same Mac mini down to the storage size and Ram.
Have had the same issues to the point where I considered not using Roon. I realize the problem was probably something I was running on the Mac or a configuration I was using. But I’m lazy and instead of spending more time troubleshooting I simply bought a super cheap Windows pc on amazon installed Roon server (core) , and an external ssd with my local music. This is used only for Roon server. I’ve had no problems since running Roon on a few Macs iPads and phones. Sorry if this is simplistic but my situation mirrored yours so closely.

Hi Michael,
thank you for your message. I had an cheap NUC before on which I ran the ROCK Operating environment and nothing else but the Roon-Server kept losing network connection or cloud not be reached min. once a day. Therefore I thought I might need a more powerful machine and as I am running mostly MacOS, I went for the Mac Mini.
But the issues stay similar. When I play music from the Roon server, it sometimes stutters or the Roon server just stops the playback.
Maybe it is because I have a large library, around 34.000 titles that are stored on my NAS.

Probably some power saving feature or you are using the USB ports of the Mac with a dac?

You need a app like Amphetamin to prevent the Mac from sending usb ports and storage to sleep.

I have my MacBook running for weeks without issue. (Hardwired, WiFi off, always on, Amphetamin app, no powersaving features, no dacs connected with usb ).

I have only 1.2 TB of music but I have zero issues even while playing multichannel files, DSD etc while doing something else on the MacBook that requires CPU and ram.

But I only use Thunderbolt cables, external drives etc .

Hi @Manuel_Winter,

When your Mac goes to sleep, it’ll cut the connection for Roon.

If you’re running Roon Server on a mac, @MarcMarc is correct here. From the recent diagnostic report you’ve sent over, it looks like the crashes are occurring right around the time of your sleep settings above.

We’re also seeing a few different attempts from Roon and Roon Server at accessing multiple IPs within your local network. Having Roon devices across multiple subnets won’t work unfortunately - I’d triple check to make sure all your devices running Roon are within the same subnet and IP scheme. :raised_hands:

It’s also a good idea to turn cloud relay off (where Apple hides your ip address)
