I have a large music library. I use a Sonic Transporter I9. It has both an internal and an external drive. Roon continually crashes when trying to load music from my external drive. I have resorted to using only the internal drive, but now I really want to load the rest of my music.
Describe your network setup
Modem Model: HITRO CODA4589, Ubiquiti: UniFi Switch 10 Gigabit 48 Port
How many tracks are on the external drive you’re attempting to load? It looks like you have about ~7.5gb of RAM on your ST, so you should be able to handle a fair amount of audio files.
Do you use a third-party editor for metadata and or tagging your tracks?
A good side test would be to load your library on a different machine running a temporary version of Roon/Roon Server to see if the same issues occur.
You could also reach out to Small Green Computer directly to inquire about increasing the RAM on the machine, depending on the size of your library.
The external drive is 20tb. Probably 2/3 full. I have tried it on a really fast I9 PC with a ton of Ram, but that also failed. Bliss is loaded, but does not appear to be running.
Thanks,
To help our technical team investigate, I’d like to enable diagnostics on your account.
Before I do, please reproduce the crash once more, note the exact time it occurs, and reply here with that timestamp. I’ll then review the diagnostics from that moment.
As a good next step, I’d test out breaking up your larger library into smaller sections, and see if you’re able to import them one at a time to test to see if you’re hitting the ceiling on your ST.
Thanks for sharing the above timestamp - our diagnostic report unfortunately only seems to have covered this morning, from about 9am-11am. This is telling, your server seems to be very active in filling up our diagnostic report in such a small timeframe.
Let me know if you’re able to break your library up and test out for any successful imports there.
Did you try to set up a fresh database prior to trying the smaller sections test? If you still had the previous database when you tried to import all the tracks, it is possible that it was still crashing due to this.
Yes, to set up a fresh database, you would have to wipe out the old one. There should be a way to reset the database from the SonicTransporter web interface.
The issue here is that the amount of tracks you are trying to import into Roon is likely hitting the limit of tracks you can use on the SonicTransporter. It looks like you’re trying to load 500k tracks on a SonicTransporter that has only 8GB of RAM, which is really pushing the limit. You’ll need more RAM for a library of this size, or to start a fresh database and use a smaller track size.
Even when I was using a Windows computer with an huge amount of ram, I had the same issues. Is there any way for you to review my logs. At one point there were issues with specific artists that were crashing the database. I believe it was Toad the wet sprocket. Can you review the logs to see if there is something similar going on? I really do not want to reload my whole database. I have put quite a bit of work over the years into tweaking the metadata.
We certainly can! That said, what @noris mentioned above still holds significant weight in the long term success of your machines performance - 8GB of RAM simply won’t be able to process 500k tracks. While we investigate logs, I’d definitely suggest looking into upgrading the RAM on your Sonic Transporter.
We’ll follow up with any additional information we’ve found after reviewing a fresh diagnostic report from your ST. Thank you!
Edit: It looks like your ST hasn’t been online or connected with our servers over the last few days - could you please stop Roon Server and reboot the machine? Ensure it has a direct ethernet connection to your primary router while we continue to troubleshoot as well, if possible.
Alternatively, you can also upload a set of manual logs - You can get the logs by navigating to Sonicorbiter.com → Manage → Apps → Roon, and send over a set of logs to our File Uploader?
