I’ve just set up roon for the first time. I’m using my iMac as the core but roon doesn’t see my Synology NAS. I go to Settigs>Storage>add folder but I’m not able to see the NAS. Since I don’t really store my music on the iMac, should the NAS be the core?

You can’t withdraw someone else’s posts. I did it because I didn’t have anything constructive.
Upon reflection, my advice is if you were the one that set up your iMac to access your NAS, then do the same thing for Roon.
Settings --> Storage --> Add folder --> Add network share
