Roon endpoint on Mac Mini Late 2012 - stop working / multiple failures

Roon Core Machine

NUC 8 2018 or 2019 / i8 processor / WD “my passport” 2 or 4 TB hard drive / ROCK
(the core seem to work fine; I can run Roon on other endpoints via WIFI - phones, IPAD, Macbook etc, without any issues.)

Networking Gear & Setup Details

ZTE router and LAN network; connected to both Mini and NUC
(Network work fine - no problem streaming movies or Tidal lossless music to the Mac Mini)
I tried to switch to WIFI connection ; I saw similar behaviour.

Connected Audio Devices

Mac Mini late 2012 model as endpoint, new solid state harddrive and old spinning HD.
optical out to Lyngdorf TDAI 2200 x 2 / Revel Ultima Saloon Speakers.
The optical out and cable etc work fine when playing Tidal app on the Mac Mini

Number of Tracks in Library

33000 tracks on harddrive.

Description of Issue

The setup worked fine for several years. Then Roon started to stop in the middle of tracks. Now when I try to play any tracks, Roon will typically try to play a track, then silently jump and try to play the next track on the album/playlist. After about 5 tries it will stop with error message “too many failures stopping playback”. Once in a while Roon will start playing the selected track, but will stop playing within 5 minutes and skip tracks until the same error message comes up.

HELP! I need somebody, not just anybody…

The mini is my only end point connected by a LAN cable.
my wireless end points work reliably.
Lan connection to the Mini also seem fine for other uses incl movie streaming.

The Mini run MacOS Catalina 10.15.7 …the latests one which can be installed on a late 2012 Mini

Ticket number is #525004

Hey @Orca99,

Thanks for taking the time to write in, and for your patience while we work through each thread! Following up on your issue, I was able to review your core diagnostics in relation to your troublesome Mac mini.

Does the same issue happen if you disable DSP settings on the mini?

With that, let’s first refresh your RAATserver on the mac mini. You can generate a new RAATServer instance on your device by following these instructions, but please be aware that this will reset your Roon Settings → Audio Tab to factory settings and I would advise making a backup of any custom DSP settings you have:

  • Create a Backup of your current Roon database
  • Exit out of Roon
  • Navigate to your Roon’s Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “RAATServer”
  • Rename the “RAATServer” folder to “RAATServer_old”
  • Restart the Roon App to generate a new RAATServer folder

Let me know if the issue occurs after the above. If it does, please share the specific date, time, and name of the track in which the issue occurs on. Thanks! :+1:

I upgraded to 2.0 / build 1272. My Mini endpoint worked fine for an hour, and then reverted to the “too many failures” syndrom.

The issue ocurred independently if DSP was used or not. The simple fix you proposed seems to have fixed the problem.
