Roon experiencing dropouts after latest update during playback (ref#SPKXMP)

Hi @Mel_Martin,

Thank you for your patience.

The team has reviewed this case closely to provide a thorough update and some options for moving forward. Here’s where we stand

  1. Diagnostic logging doesn’t indicate any recent memory spikes or crashes associated with the dropouts you’ve reported here. The dropouts we do see occur when Roon receives a blank port assignment for the TCP connection to networked Zones. A reboot of either Roon or the affected Zone would temporarily resolve the issue by creating a new network discovery process.

This actually matches the disconnection we saw in logs when you reported a similar event back in May of 2021. Do you have the same underlying network as in that report?

  1. We have seen memory spikes in the past in some of the logs associated with your reports here on Roon Community. These memory events tended to crop up when you played particularly large playlists. We have a constellation of fixes for memory stress that we’ve recently bundled into the latest Early Access release.

We’d like to ask if you want to migrate your Roon Server and Remotes to the Early Access branch to try this new release. It might release some of the symptoms if there is, in fact, memory pressure.

Here are instructions for migrating to Early Access: https://help.roonlabs.com/portal/en/kb/articles/roon-early-access-program

However, we cannot stress enough that certain dropouts visible in logs are the result of unexpected network discovery handling by this network. Something in your network setup is interfering with Roon’s communication with networked Zones. This has likely been happening for years and exacerbating many of the dropout-related issues you’ve had.

We can almost certainly relieve the underlying issue, or at least improve things, if you can share some of the details of your actual network topology and settings. Can you please elaborate on your actual network pathway here?

We’ll watch for your response. Thank you!

Thank you for your response Connor, but it does not get to the core of the issue. For. more than a week, I’ve rebooted my Roon+ server, and it fixes all the problems I’ve been having. Why do you think that is? If there is some network problem in the house why does it ONLY show up on Roon? My playlists are usually no more than 10 albums. That does not seem excessive, but the problem shows up when I’m loading albums 2-4 in the morning. Not after the playlist is large.

If my network had problems, I would think it would show up elsewhere. I have a large video server with more than a thousand movies on it, many in 4K. Movies never fail to load, there are no dropouts. That’s much rougher on the network than playing some music files I think you would agree. I’ve specified my router and network topology in the past. I’ve done it several times. My network work great, it was installed by AV professionals, and I’ve never had any other issues. Just Roon.

I can install the early access build, altho it’s seems a bit of a hassle. It is also somewhat of an admission that there are some things in your software that can be improved, not a problem with my network or other hardware, which all work perfectly after I reboot the Roon server. What is the explanation for that do you think? I think the answer is obvious.

Describe the issue

My issue was closed 'as solved' because no ne responded within the requisite time. As you know, this issue has persisted for more than a year. It began with a Roon software update, and has never been fixed. Your team has blamed it on my network, and Roon approved devices. The fact is I can't load albums in the morning without suffering sometimes 3 minute delays before the album appears. It is fixed instantly with a reboot of my Roon server. I have had a couple of IT people out, and both agree it is the server or the software. My network is performing well. When I point my Roon approved devices at a hard drive filled with a mirror of the same music, everything loads fine. This week, I re-installed my Bluesound server, and all files loaded without incident. I have been really patient with Roon support, but this is an expensive system that does not even work in a basic way. (Loading an album to play without unacceptable delays).

Describe your network setup

You have all this info in past submissions. It's a pro grade router on a GB ethernet topology.
