Roon experiencing dropouts after latest update during playback (ref#SPKXMP)

Hi @Mel_Martin,

Yes, our team has been chipping away at multiple areas that needed improvement in relation to memory.

Let us know if you’re successful in migrating over to early access, and if you have any questions along the way! I’d create a backup or two prior to performing the migration just to be safe. :+1:

I’ve been given no instruction on ho to do this that I remember seeing.

Hi @Mel_Martin,

@benjamin shared a link to Roon help page that details what the EA program is about and how to switch from production to EA (and back).

Click on that link and check it out, if you have any specific questions on the process just ask.

Hello @Mel_Martin,

Carl is exactly right! Benjamin included the link in his previous message, but to make things as easy as possible so you don’t have to go digging for it, here is the direct guide on how to switch your system over to the Early Access track:

The guide will walk you through exactly what you need to do. As Benjamin mentioned, please make sure to create a fresh backup of your Roon database before making the switch, just to be on the safe side.

Take a look at the instructions, and please keep us updated on how it goes! If you run into any confusing steps or get stuck along the way, just reply to this thread and we will be happy to walk you through it.

Hi @Mel_Martin,

The performance and memory improvements have been included in the last Roon update. We’re curious to hear how this has affected your experience in Roon, as it’s been a few weeks since you’ve last posted here.

Please reach out if you’re still having issues. We’ll watch for your response and proceed from there. Thank you!

Yes, same issues. When I re-boot server every morning it is fine. When I don’t, it hangs. I think I’m going on almost 2 years with the problem. I love Roon, there’s nothing out there like it with the features or power… but should not have to reboot to use it.

Hi @Mel_Martin,

Thanks for the update, I’m sorry to hear the recent update hasn’t helped. The good news is that our team has implemented some additional optimizations on the latest Early Access branch that should also make their way over the full Production update soon.

Once that happens, I’m confident these additional optimizations will help your case. :+1:

Hope so… I’ll eagerly await the update..

Hello @Mel_Martin ,

Thanks in advance for your patience as the production release makes its way through the dev queue.

Last update was golden. Yesterday had 1 second pause loading daily playlist. Certainly acceptable. Today, no delays. So definitely progress being made. Very encouraging.

Hey @Mel_Martin,

That is most excellent to hear! We’ll of course keep this thread open so you have some additional time to test performance over the next few days, as that is when (ideally now in the past) performance would start to dip.

Keep us posted on how things continue to perform, and thank you again for sticking with us for this long. :folded_hands:

Thanks… just got another update… hope it doesn’t break what has been fixed… will see tomorrow..

Loaded this morning with no issues or delays. It would be interesting to know what caused this problem. I did see one thing this morning that I have seen intermittently before, which is when you right click on an album to load it into a playlist. It highlights all the albums and then locks the interface, so the only way out is to close the Roon app on my Mac. It’s rare and does not happen every time, but it has been going on for a long time.

Most mornings it works. This morning it hung for 30 seconds at 9:03 MST on the Moon Symphony. Have to say it’s doing better but not solved as yet.

Hung again this morning at 6:19 MST for 30 seconds. It was the 6th album being loaded to a playlist. My impression is the previous build worked better than this one.

Going to go back to rebooting server.. this last version reverted to the bad loading behavior..

Hi @Mel_Martin,

Thank you for your diligent updates and our apologies for the lapse.

We’ve identified a potential regression in logs capturing the time period of your most recent reports. Development is investigating a potential solution.

Fortunately, logs don’t show any issues with memory consumption itself.

If you encounter these stalls again, please try rebooting the unit (or at least restarting the server) and waiting for about 45-60 minutes. This will allow the overstuffed queue of background updates to complete.

We’ll reach out as more information becomes available. Thank you.

I’m not seeing the stalls now because I am rebooting every morning. I won’t see them unless I stop rebooting. Is that what you are suggesting? Thanks

Hey @Mel_Martin,

No worries, if you’ve been rebooting each morning for smooth playback, that is a fine workaround for now. Our team has enough information to work on additional optimizations that should help your case directly.

Hi @Mel_Martin,

We’re leaving some verbose diagnostic logging enabled for your account that will automatically capture any unexplained memory spikes. You can use Roon as normal (including any workarounds you rely on, like daily rebooting). Our team will still have the information we need behind the scenes regardless of whether you actually reproduce the problem.

Once we have a firm conclusion or next step, our team will reach out here.

Thank you again for your patience.
