Roon is running on a basic Lenovo ThinkCentre PC with 1.8TB storage, 32GB RAM and 13th generation i5 processor. Its an all-in-one asesembly with no network involvement. Sound is fed via Bluetooth to a Wiim receptor which then feeds a McIntosh preamp via interconnects. Library is about 1200 CDs. I have been doing somewhat intense work creating playlists and experiencing problems with the mouse/cursor. It got so bad this morning I had to reboot the machine. That was 30 minutes ago and Roon has just simply failed to come back up ....waiting for the server. Can I just re-install and restore from backup??
We’re sorry to see you’ve bumped into such a situation.
In order to investigate this issue further we would like to ask you to share with us analytics data from your Roon Server.
Please follow this article in order to find the logs folder:
.
After you get the logs folder can you please upload it to Dropbox, Google Drive or a similar service and post a link here? Please be sure to turn on “sharing by link”, instructions on how to do so for Dropbox can be found here and for Google Drive can be found here.
Diagnostics indicate that you might have recently used RoonServer. Are we correct in assuming that you’ve resolved this issue?
A database shouldn’t be necessary to resolve performance issues - we’d need to pinpoint why the server crashed by examining logs. If you’re still encountering this issue, please let us know the approximate date/time of the freeze or crash, and we’ll examine logs around that timestamp.
If you do want to try refreshing the database, you can follow these steps:
Create a [Backup](
https://help.roonlabs.com/portal/en/kb/articles/backup
) of your current database Exit out of Roon + RoonServer (from taskbar area)
Navigate to your Roon [Database Location](
https://kb.roonlabs.com/Database_Location
)
Find the folder that says “Roon Server” and "Roon"
Rename the “RoonServer” folder to “RoonServer_old” and "Roon" to "Roon_old"
Reinstall the Roon App from our [Downloads Page](
https://roonlabs.com/downloads
) to generate a new Roon folder
Verify if the issue persists on a fresh database before restoring the backup
Hi Connor,
Thanks for the help. I was in a rush and didn’t know what your response ties would be. So,in the event, I uninstalled completely and then used a recent backup to restore. Lost only a days work. Since then, the “server trying to connect” has been there most of the time with varying lengths of delay. I now dread to switch Roon off!! MY modus operanus is now to do a manual backup each time I do significant work just to get round the problem. To be frank, I don’t think software intended for widespread use should be failing to start up with such regularity! We are talking multiple installations here with the simplest of setups and no network complications.
I’ve been with Roon probably from the very start, at the demise of Meridian Sooloos. Its come a very long way with some seriously clever curating functionalities, but there are worrying shortcomings. Why does the backup not send out notifications, for example? Why can’t I re-import Roon playlists when its possible to do so from Tidal et al? Why are the admin pages so grey and drab and off-putting? Why is it buffering all the time? Why is there no exit button; just clicking on the X to close the window is no assurance that the application will close down tidily.
I’ve got a clear day coming up sometime this week, and I’ll try to send the logs you asked for. I’m sure you know that the knowledge required will be beyond most end users. Is the strategy to become a specialist esoteric product?
I appreciate your follow-up and additional details.
We were able to enable diagnostics for your Roon Server, and saw the recent restore you’ve performed. Unfortunately, this is all we saw so far, and with it we didn’t see any issues.
It would be most helpful if you reproduce the issue, and take note of the specific track playing (if applicable) as well as the date and time, and we’ll take another look.
If you find a gap in Roon’s product features, I highly suggest sharing your feedback or feature request over in our dedicated feature suggestions category:
We’ll be monitoring for your reply and results, thank you!
Hi, problem solved!! It seems to me that at startup, Roon looks for a networked server that’s not there, in my case. So we go into this never ending process with the “waiting for server” message. Decided to click on the “select another server option” that comes with this message. The next screen has a “select this PC” option. Clicked on that and we were away!!
Thanks for the help!
