Thank you for your post. We’ll need a little more information to pin down what’s wrong here. Logs show a number of devices associated with your server machine, and the specific troubleshooting steps will depend on the audio protocols involved. The majority of the dropouts we can see in the latest log set are on the System Output of a computer, and seem to be caused by an interruption in the underlying connection between the client computer and your ROon Server machine.
Are you able to provide the name of the device or Zone to which you’re playing when this occurs? Does it happen with every Zone?
Does it matter if the file is from your local library or a streaming service?
Does disabling any DSP help in MUSE? What about forcing a lower sample rate in the Device Setup page or by setting a sample rate conversion in MUSE itself?
We’ll watch for your reply and proceed from there. Thanks!
This happens when I’m playing to my Mike Desktop zone .
I have also had issues with my Dining Room zone.
I have had issues with both streaming and local files.
I don’t have any presets selected in MUSE. I’ve never messed with it.
It’s quite intermittent. Yesterday it worked flawlessly all morning. In the afternoon it was a bit glitchy. Some days it gets hung up just switching tracks. In order to get anything playing again, I usually have to restart Roon Server and Roon Desktop.
A few brief follow-up questions to help expedite our investigation.
We see requests for playback/control/clock data timing out between RoonServer and endpoints.
Do you have any managed switches or mesh nodes in addition to the Starlink router?
Do you have both the WiFi and ethernet network interfaces active on the problematic desktop remote?
Is the Dining Room Zone that you mentioned connected to the network via ethernet or WiFi? Diagnostics indicate this is a Roon Ready Zone. What is the specific error message you see when that drops out?
We’ll watch for your response and proceed from there. In the meantime, we’ll gather additional logs to better pinpoint any recent errors.
I have a switch by my Starlink router and a switch in my office. Neither are managed switches. There is a crossover between them.
The RoonServer is connected to the switch by the router.
My Mike Desktop zone (where I do most of my listening) is connected to the switch in my office.
The Dining Room zone is WiFi (Starlink).
I actually haven’t had too many issues the last few days. When the problem occurs, there’s no error message. Sometimes I hit the Play button and nothing happens. The UI doesn’t even switch to the pause button. After a long time, it might start skipping tracks (which I hate immensely). So, if playback doesn’t resume after a few seconds, I restart my app and/or server.
We went through the logs from your server. Your Mike Desktop zone plays to the KEF LSX II LT through Roon on your MacBook Air, and that is where we see the problem. Eight times in about 14 hours (5:59 PM, 8:17 PM, and 9:17 PM on October 5, then 4:00 AM, 5:00 AM, 5:45 AM, 7:05 AM, and 7:52 AM on October 6, Pacific time), Roon on the MacBook Air reported the LSX II LT being removed and added again within about a second. Each time, the Mike Desktop zone was removed and recreated. One of these happened an hour after you paused a track at 6:06 AM, which matches what you describe. We also see the MacBook Air’s connection to the server stop responding for more than 30 seconds about four times an hour, including overnight. The server itself and the Dining Room zone do not show the same pattern.
To narrow this down, please tell us:
How is the LSX II LT connected to the MacBook Air: directly by USB, or through a dock or hub?
Is the MacBook Air’s Wi-Fi turned on while it is also connected to the office switch by Ethernet?
Does the MacBook Air go to sleep during the day?
Please also note the date, time, and time zone the next time Play does nothing, so we can find that moment in the logs.
Went to unpause a track playing on my Dining Room zone from my Macbook. The play/pause icon didn’t change for several minutes. Eventually it switched to the pause symbol but it had the file loading animation. It skipped a few tracks but could never actually play anything.
Rebooted the Roon Server and everything worked fine.
Thanks for logging those times. They helped a lot. We found the Tuesday 2:38 PM failure in your Roon Server logs. Mike Desktop paused normally, but when you pressed Play, Roon Server started to resume the zone and never finished. Restarting Roon Server cleared it, and the next Play worked right away.
That stall seems to be set off by Roon on your MacBook Air, not the Mac mini, the KEFs, or your network. The MacBook’s connection to Roon Server drops about every 15 minutes, overnight too. Each time it reconnects, it sends Roon Server a burst of requests, and the bursts grow bigger with every reconnect. By Tuesday afternoon they were big enough to overwhelm Roon Server for several seconds at a time, and that is when Play stopped working. Restarting Roon Server alone doesn’t reset this. Quitting and reopening Roon on the MacBook does.
Could you try the following?
When you’re not using the MacBook to control Roon, fully quit Roon on it (Roon > Quit Roon, not just closing the window). If you do keep it open, quit and reopen it once a day.
Tell us whether the “Play does nothing” problem comes back with Roon closed on the MacBook.
Answer two quick questions about the MacBook: is it on Wi-Fi only, and does it sleep or use Low Power Mode when you’re not using it?
Your Mac mini setup looks healthy now. Turning off its Wi-Fi seems to have helped. The KEFs briefly disappear and reappear a few times a day, but only while idle. That looks like the speakers going into standby and isn’t causing these failures.
