Describe the issue

When I open Roon it asks to start server so I press the button and nothing happens.
I am running Ventura OS 13.7.5

Describe your network setup

4.2 Quad-Core Intel Core i7 32gb of memory 2400MHZ DDR4 running MacOS Ventura 13.7.5

Roon Server has no graphical interface/window and runs in the background. If it is started, you should see a Roon icon in the notification area on the Mac’s menu bar, top right.

You wrote that you opened Roon, which I suppose is the graphical Roon app. What happens with that after it asks to start the server?

Hello @Derrick_Kaleta,

Thank you for reaching out to the Roon Support team.

@Suedkiez is absolutely right — Roon Server traditionally runs in the background without a graphical user interface. However, please note that we previously provided separate packages for Roon and Roon Server, but the current version is a unified application that should launch with a user interface.

Could you please confirm whether you see the Roon icon in the top-right corner of your screen? Also, what happens when you right-click the icon and choose Open Application?

We’ve enabled diagnostics on your device and can confirm that the Roon Server component is running properly. For further guidance on setup, please refer to the article below:

Hi,
The icon is there on top and the app shows up in the dock. The problem is that it asks to find the server and so I click on the purple button and then the icon spins or whatever you want to call it in the white box but the music never opens up.

Regards, Derrrick

Hello @Derrick_Kaleta,

Can you please navigate to macOS System Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network , and make sure Roon is allowed. If it is already enabled, toggle it off and on again. Then reboot your Mac, and see if the same issue persists.

Kind regards,
Vadim

Hi,

Thanks for the response
I have done the above numerous times and it does not make difference. I listed out all the steps I have taken in my original topic that I started. When I open Roon it asks to connect to the server on “this Mac” so I press the button and nothing happens.
I am running Ventura OS 13.7.5

1)I have downloaded Roon again and replaced the current application
2)I have toggled on and off the permission in the Privacy settings for Apple Music access for Roon
3) I have restarted (more times than I care to count)
4) I have doubled checked that I do not have my VPN on.
5) Roon has access in my firewall list ( and I have toggled that on and off as well)

Roon worked fine up until 3 weeks ago or so, it suddenly stopped working and then after I updated the OS it still does not work.

Hey @Derrick_Kaleta,

Thanks for the update - we’ve shared a fresh digantoics report with our development team for further analysis. In the meantime, let’s try a fresh database and see if your issues persist:

  • Create a Backup of your current database
  • Exit out of Roon + RoonServer (from taskbar area)
  • Navigate to your Roon Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “Roon Server” and “Roon”
  • Rename the “RoonServer” folder to “RoonServer_old” and “Roon” to “Roon_old”
  • Reinstall the Roon App from our Downloads Page to generate a new Roon folder
  • Verify if the issue persists on a fresh database before restoring the backup

Here is the process outlined from a macOS machine:

Hi,

I can’t access the settings, it never gets to that point so I can’t do a backup. I could do the rest of this but a backup does not seem possible.

Thanks, Derrick

Don’t you already have a backup? You should

Hi @Derrick_Kaleta,
Thanks for reaching out. Do you happen to have any backups from a time when RoonServer was working as expected? If so, restoring from one of those could help if you’re unable to create a new backup right now. Just a heads-up—restoring from an older backup will roll things back to that point in time, so any changes made since then may be lost.

If you’d like any help with the restore process, just let us know—we’re happy to walk you through it!

Hi,

I did the rename and downloaded and installed Roon again. I still get them same result after I start and hit “click to use this Mac”. Is this an Apple thing or Roon? Roon used to work perfectly fine and then all of a sudden it doesn’t.
Thanks, Derrick

Hi @Derrick_Kaleta,

The crash we see possibly related to user permissions or keychain passwords for this MacOS user profile. Where have you installed Roon and RoonServer on this machine? Do you have separate user profiles on this Mac?

If you open the Terminal application from Applications → Utilities, try starting RoonServer with the sudo command:

sudo /Applications/RoonServer.app/Contents/MacOS/RoonServer

You might need to replace the pathway for RoonServer to the installation location specific to your Mac.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Hi,

Can’t seem to get this to work either. The location is -

/Applications/Roon.app/Contents

After I type in the command and my password this is what I get-:

00:00:00.000 **Info: [1] get lock file path: /tmp/.rnsgem0-**
00:00:00.008 **Info: [1] GetLockFile, fd: 175**
00:00:00.008 **Info: [1] GetLockFile, res: 0**
00:00:00.008 **Info: [1] get lock file path: /var/tmp/.rnsgem0-**
00:00:00.008 **Info: [1] GetLockFile, fd: 176**
00:00:00.008 **Info: [1] GetLockFile, res: 0**
00:00:00.009 Trace: [1] Nope, we are the only one running

Thanks, Derrick

Hey @Derrick_Kaleta,

Thanks for the update - you haven’t used Time Machine or another third-party backup service to restore your Mac database anytime recently, have you?

Lets see if a full removal of Roon and Roon Server may be a proper next step. To do this, you’ll want to delete both applications and all supporting folders (except your saved backups!)

  1. Quit Roon and Roon Server

Make sure both Roon and RoonServer are completely closed. You can check Activity Monitor to ensure no background processes are still running.

  1. Delete the apps themselves

Go to your Applications folder and move these to the Trash (if present):

  • Roon.app
  • RoonServer.app
  1. Remove Roon support folders

Open Finder and use Go > Go to Folder… (or press Shift + Command + G), then go to each of the following paths and delete the folder if it exists:

  • ~/Library/Roon
  • ~/Library/RoonServer
  • ~/Library/RAATServer

You can also check:

  • ~/Library/Logs/Roon
  • ~/Library/Logs/RoonServer

(Use caution if you’re unfamiliar with deleting from these paths—always back up first.)

  1. Empty the Trash

Once everything is deleted, empty the Trash to finalize the removal.

Optional: Reboot

Then, you should able to perform a fresh download once again.
