Describe the issue

Roon freezes after waking from sleep on Windows 11

Describe your network setup

Wired 1G LAN from desktop to FIOS Router

I have reinstalled Windows 11 and the issue still persists. This is what happens…

I launch Roon. Everything works normally. My Windows 11 PC falls asleep. When I wake it from sleep and click on the Roon icon that is minimized in the taskbar Roon will not “maximize” to show the UI. I can see the Roon process running in the taskbar. I have to kill the process and relaunch Roon for it to work properly again. Here you can see what happens when I open the Task Manager and what the UI looks like sometimes when attempting to “maximize” after sleep.

If you go down the list, do you see RAATServer, RoonAppliance, and RoonServer running in background?

It looks like there is a graphical error because your screen is squished into the top left. Have you tried closing the Roon GUI client when done using it and before the PC goes to sleep?

Maybe this helps too / is the same issue:

I also experience a lot of problems with my w11 pc that I also work on. First was W10 pc and then W11 pc after the update. NEVER had problems before and now Roon won’t start anymore. I only use this as a remote because the Roon server is on another W11 pc. That doesn’t give any problems at all. I have reinstalled Roon several times but it won’t start. Too much work at the moment to completely reinstall the work pc. I have also been busy with the Firewall settings. So now i use the Qobuz app on this pc….pff.

Only RAATServer is running in the background. That is the only background process running normally when Roon is open and it continues to run in the background after wake from sleep. The issue is that the Roon client is broken after waking from sleep.

If I close Roon before Windows 11 goes to sleep then yes it will launch normally after it wakes. The issue is that the client is broken AFTER it wakes from sleep if it has been open prior to falling asleep. This behavior should not happen as no other application does this. Clearly a Roon issue.

I’m running Roon Server on my Windows 11 computer right now and I see all three. I don’t know why or why not. I use this computer when away from home with no issues.

I don’t think this problem started happening until the build prior to 1462.

Hi @src01,
Thanks for reaching out to us about this issue. I tried to reproduce this on my Windows 11 machine using the steps you gave but was unable to. This makes me think this is related to your instance of Roon. As a first step can you try refreshing your Roon installation by following the below steps?

  • Create a Backup of your current database
  • Exit out of Roon
  • Navigate to your Roon Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “Roon”
  • Rename the “Roon” folder to “Roon_old”
  • Reinstall the Roon App from our Downloads Page to generate a new Roon folder
  • Verify if the issue persists on a fresh database before restoring the backup

If the problem persists after trying this please let us know the date and approximate time the freeze occurs so we can find the event in your logs.

Hi,
The Roon database is on a shared NFS drive and not local to the Roon installation. I have already reinstalled Windows and Roon multiple times in an attempt to solve this problem.

Edit: When you talk about the “current database” are you talking about the database where the backups are kept or something else?

I should also note the Roon Server is running as a linux service on another system, not on Windows 11 along side the client. The client is crashing when Windows 11 wakes from sleep.

Hi @src01,
Thanks for giving these extra details about your set up. We’ve requested diagnostics from your Roon installation on Windows. Could you please activate the Roon app on that computer for a few minutes to allow the diagnostics request to be completed?

As I mentioned previously, it looks like a graphics engine issue from your screen pic. Roon is built using OpenGL 3 like a video game, not a Windows OS rendered GUI. What graphics card are you using and have you updated and installed the latest graphics driver from the graphic manufacturer, do not rely on Windows update to maintain drivers, it does a horrible job.

Roon is up and running for diags. Thanks.

I am using the latest AMD Adrenaline drivers. Everything works perfectly on this desktop and I have not experienced any graphical issues.

Have you checked under the Windows Event Viewer to see if there is an underlying/or/associated Windows event error?

Just the typical crash event.

The program Roon.exe version 1.0.0.0 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Security and Maintenance control panel.

Hey @src01,

Do you have any VPNs or additional firewalls within your setup that may be interfering with things? Can you confirm all your Roon devices are running within the same local subnet?

What was your process for reinstalling Roon on the windows?

This refers to the instance of Roon installed on the Windows machine, not Roon Server. Here’s a GIF of the process via a Windows remote. In this case, don’t rename the Roon Server folder if you happen to see one on your Windows machine (you shouldn’t since Roon Server is elsewhere, but just in case :+1:)

All Roon_old on Windows

Thanks. The support person mentioned database and provided a link to the database used by Roon for backups on the server. Not for the local app data. Either way I have reinstalled Windows and Roon and the problem persists.
