Roon freezes and skips tracks on sonictransporter i5 after upgrade to version 2.9 (ref#S3X1N6)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· None of the above quite fits

None of the above quite fits

· None of these quite match

Tell us what's going on

· Roon is on a sonictransporter i5...which i recently upgraded to version 2.9.

Tracks will play for a while then they begin to pause or skip to the next track. Eventually roon will just freeze, I will get the notification from my roon remote that it is looking for the server. At some point even the sonictransporter we freeze and I can no longer access it...I have to reboot it.

I have tried deleting roon from the server and re-installing...only connecting to tidal and streaming...neither restoring from backup or changing any other settings...the same behavior persists.

I have tried only playing through my wired connection and leaving wireless players offline...same behavior.

I have tried playing from local files on a usb hard drive connected to my sonictransporter...same behavior.

I have been trouble shooting with Andrew at Small Green Computer and he suggested I reach out Roon support so you guys can check my logs.

I have been using the same setup for many years with some issues from time to time but nothing like this.

Tell us about your home network

· Netgear Orbi RBR50v2 router with sonictransporter i5 software version 2.9 directly wired to it.

Latest version of roon 2.65 build 1653 installed on transporter.

Orbi has wired connection through 2 switches (trendnet greennet) to microrendu.

Microrendu version 2.9 connects to iFi Nano iOne DAC.

Wireless connnections from Orbi to 2 Squeezebox Booms and sometimes to my Samsung S23 as a player.

I don not use a VPN.

Hi @Ned_Lavengood,

Thanks for writing in and sharing such a thorough report.

We’re seeing a few different machines running Roon Server at the moment, do you see this issue across multiple machines, or just the Sonictransporter?

If you could, please reproduce the issue specifically on the ST and share a more specific date and time around the issue.

In the meantime, try:

  1. Try limiting your play queue length and see if that changes any behavior.
  2. Orbi firmware: confirm you're on the latest firmware. Orbi mesh systems (especially the RBR50v2) have had issues with link-state fluctuations on wired backhaul.
  3. Disable IGMP Proxying/Snooping on the Orbi if it's enabled — this can interfere with Roon's multicast discovery (SOOD protocol).
  4. Try disabling Airplay in Roon Settings → Audio. The logs show Roon constantly scanning for AirPlay devices (it found your Android TV at 192.168.1.19). This adds background network chatter.
  5. Reduce active endpoints — the Samsung S23 phone (SM-S911U at 192.168.1.22) is constantly dropping its RAAT connection and reconnecting throughout both logs. If it's not being used as a player, disable it in Roon Settings → Audio to reduce background connection churn.
  6. The TrendNet switches — "GreenNet" (energy-saving) switches are known to cause issues with audio streaming because they can drop link speed or go into power-save modes. Try replacing them with a simple unmanaged switch, or check if the green energy settings can be disabled.
Thank you! 👍

Thanks for that info. It will be a few days before I can work on this but I will go through the list.

Its a surprise to me that you are seeing roon server on multiple devices…I thought is was only on my sonictransporter…i will have to try and figure out where else it is installed…crazy.

Short story: the system seems to working great right now…i think disabling IGMP Proxying/Snooping on the Orbi is what fixed it…that one check box…What the ****!!!

Long story:

I cannot find a second instance of roon server on any of my devices…so not sure what you are seeing there? I looked at all my connected devices though my router gui and then checked any that could have roon sever on them but none do??

Before going through the below I deleted and reinstalled roon on my sonictransporter, and adjusted nothing other than turning on volume leveling. I connected to Tidal but did not connect my usb hard drive…later as things appeared to be working I did connect my hard drive.

  1. Although I started with limited que lengths, at this point long ques are working fine as well.

  2. I checked orbi firmware and it was up to date.

  3. I disabled IGMP as you recommended…pretty sure this was the fix.

4)I couldn’t find airplay running under audio…I did see one tv that mentioned airplay but that device was not enabled.

  1. To begin testing the only device I had enabled was microrendu…my S23 was not enabled. At this point I have the microrendu and a squeezebox boom enabled and both seem to working normally. Microrendu is wired the boom is wireless.

  2. This is interesting as I bought those “GreenNet” switches because they were recommended somewhere for audio streaming…I have not done anything with these…they are unmanaged so I can’t change settings…I can only replace them, which I have not done yet but I may in the near future.

So at this point all is well… its pretty crazy to me that the one setting in my router could have been the cause. My system sounds better than ever right now, more detail, dynamics, openess…its crazy and makes me think that the router has been messing with quality of my music for a long time now…have had that router for many years! Did “upgrading” my sonictransporter to 2.9 cause/exacerbate this conflict with the router? I don’t know.

Music server systems can be incredible in so many was…and so frustrating as well. How many people are listening to compromised music because they don’t have all the little settings correct…it has be a lot. I spent a lot of hours dealing with this to get it working, and Im glad I did, but I would expect many people would just say screw it and stream bluetooth from there phone to a portable speaker…its just too complicated. Maybe someone will come up with an AI agent that can crawl though your system and settings to make sure everything is correct and optimized…it needs to happen.

Anyway, thanks so much for your help! I would have literally never figured this out and my system would have been worthless. Its going to bother me for a while that one little thing like that router setting can shut you down…what will it be next time? LOL!!! sort of

Hey @Ned_Lavengood,

Thanks for the comprehensive remarks, and it’s good to hear you’re up and running after the IGMP router setting change. I can’t comment on any personal experience with the switches, but for generally of switches of any kind - if you have trouble, definitely try to bypass them right away. Glad you got this sorted. We’ll go ahead and close this one out. Enjoy the music!
