Description of Issue

Roughly 1/3 of the time I try to simply type the name of an artist while in the “Artist” tab, it recognizes the first letter or two that I type and then Roon freezes. If I have music playing, the music continues to play however Roon is completely unresponsive and I have to open my Windows task manager (which also shows Roon as “not responding”) to force-close it. This is pretty annoying as I am forced to do this at least twice a day…

Hi @Mark_Ross

Do you happen to have any other remote devices? Does it happen with them as well?

Does it happen in the Albums browser as well or just artists?

I do not have any remote devices that I use, other than than the app on my phone which I will occasionally use to switch songs that are playing on my PC (I do not use it as an audio zone).

100% of the time I am simply playing music on my PC, which is my Room core. Considering I have such a high-end PC, I am surprised with the frequency of these freezes. They have been occurring for at least several months now, and with several updates since then without it getting fixed I figure I should let you guys know!

I typically spend 98% of my time in the Artists tab, so I have not experienced it in other tabs like Albums but I have no reason to suspect that it would be any different unfortunately. I imagine having such a large library of music might be part of the issue…

Anyway I love Roon, thank you for the prompt reply and keep up the great work!

Thanks for the insight, @Mark_Ross. If possible, I’d definitely try giving this a go on Albums — I’d also assume it would be the same, but if not it would be a good data point to know.

Either way, the next time this happens, please close Roon and use the directions found here and send us over a set of logs using a shared Dropbox link (or any other file sharing service). Depending on the issue we might be able to see what’s happening in the logs.

Hi Dylan…

Here’s the logs from the most recent freeze. The freeze happened when I typed “J” into the Artists tab:

08/26 21:57:15 Debug: GETKEY. KeyToChar(J, False, False) → j

Thanks, @Mark_Ross. It looks like there might be more information we need that I’m hoping we can get from Event Viewer. Can you try this:

  1. Press Win + R and type eventvwr.msc
  2. Press OK – this should open Event Viewer window
  3. From the left sidebar go to Windows Logs > Application
  4. Right click on the Application subsection and pick Filter Current Log... from the context menu
  5. On the Filter tab for the Logged section pick a parameter Last 30 days and press OK
  6. Right click on the Application subsection again and pick Save filtered log file as.. from the context menu
  7. Enter the log file name, for e.g. Roon_USERNAME , and press Save

Looking at the Event Viewer logs I see this:

The program Roon.exe version stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Security and Maintenance control panel.

Do you see any errors being reported when you go to Security and Maintenance in Control Panel?

that’s the error report, not sure if that’s any more info or not…

Thanks, @Mark_Ross. I’m going to check with the team on this one and will follow up with you once I have their feedback.
