Roon Grouping/Ungrouping Pauses Music on BlueSound/NAD Devices (ref#NTGIAF)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

Hey @accm, welcome to the community, and thanks for laying out the setup so clearly.

What you’re seeing is useful feedback. Grouping and ungrouping zones does require Roon to resync playback, and on RAAT-based endpoints that can create a short interruption while the zones re-align. With BlueSound/NAD, the part we’d want to separate is whether this is just the expected sync handoff, or whether it is longer than it should be in your setup.

Could you check two things for us?

  • Does the pause happen with every zone combination, or only when one specific device is involved?
  • Does it happen with local files as well as streamed content, or only with one source?

In the meantime, please try one simple comparison: start playback on a single BlueSound/NAD zone, then group a second zone after music is already playing, and note how long the interruption lasts. If you can, also try the reverse, ungrouping one zone while playback is active. That will tell us whether the delay is consistent in both directions.

If you share the results of those tests, we can tell whether we’re looking at expected sync behavior or something more specific to your network or endpoints.

Thanks for the quick response. Currently I’m using Roon only with Tidal streaming. The pause is in all combinations roughly the same with around 2 seconds, sometimes more for grouping and ungrouping the same. Independent of the device “starting the grouping”.

I know, it’s not much, but interrupting the music flow having guests over.. I would expect roon core beeing the clock so new devices in group would only need to sync to existing clock and then unmute itself if ready. Could you explain why regrouping needs resync also for already running devices? Are the first device giving the clock? Is this the reason why I can not ungroup the first device?

Thanks for explaining or giving insides on the way how RAAT works or could be optimized for grouping/ungrouping.

Hello @accm

I have gone ahead and enabled diagnostics mode for your account and what this action will do is next time your Roon Server is active, a set of logs will automatically be generated and uploaded to our servers for analysis.

I wanted to reach out because I’ve been keeping an eye on our servers, waiting for the aforementioned diagnostics report.

For some reason it is not reaching our servers, even after I tried re-enabling diagnostics on your account. I also ran a quick test and I was able to submit a similar report from my setup here, so something else is going on.

So we can move forward, I was hoping for now you could use the directions found here and send them to our Logs Uploader Service and let us know after, thanks!
